Title: Most effective camo to use in scrub desert
Post by: nukeduster on June 07, 2014, 06:36:11 PM
So I keep having an argument with people here in AZ as to which is the best camo to use in AZ so I took it upon myself to do a comparison of the various camo patterns that I have and use or like to use. This is preliminary, as I decided it didn't showcase well enough yet the capabilities of these camos, and I noticed that I forgot to bring some out to the field with me that I had had in a different bag.

If anyone has any input on how they would compare them, beyond actually wearing them, if you have any ideas of distances and angles for camera and poser to best illustrate the differences I'm all ears.

Tried to keep exposure and color hue settings for camera the same position to position, though the sun was setting and a few have slight differences but I still feel they are overall representative vs one another.

Ie: First picture for all camo, settings the same for all shots. Second picture for camo, settings the same for all.

Thoughts?

Great idea for a thread! I would have liked to see some M81 but you gotta work with what you're given. Just out of curiosity why is UCP even on this list? Most would say it doesn't blend in with anything. Besides your Grandmothers couch.

Any camo that breaks up your silhouette is good enough. Even UCP is good for that. As for the best, none is any better than the others if you are moving or presenting a silhouette. Camouflage is intended to help break up your silhouette while you are stationary. You want as much shadow as possible as well.

Where the largest mistake is, that most people dress to the nines but forget there hands and face. Which for most people shines like a beacon.  Again, while moving, it doesn't matter,  but when stationary, try covering your face with netting, dark tan (coyote) or darker.

A dark camouflage is better in the shade and prone, not moving. Dark includes camouflages that are black, green, or brown based. This includes (but are not limited to) woodland, MC, flektarn, DPM, ATACS FG, most Russian patterns, solid black, solid brown, and OD.

Some tans, including desert marpat, chocolate chip, and solid coyote are dark enough for this purpose in really arid conditions.

Really light patterns/colors such as 3 color US, khaki, and urban blues have a hard time functioning as intended.

ATACS AU, Desert DPM, and UCP are marginal in thier effectiveness.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what color you are wearing. Tigers and leopards are friggin orange ffs. The stripes and spots are what breaks up thier outline. You won't see them until they pounce.

I think Russian masking suit 6sh122 Ratnik is reallu good one. It's a revirsible suit. The top of it is Russian green EMR camo, and the inner part is less bright, smth like sand camo. Due to it this suit can be used in different seasons or locations.
