Well, you're not giving us much to work with. What kind of handgun? An automatic? A revolver?

Also, your price range is a bit low. $250 will get you a Hi Point, a Cobra derringer, a Phoenix Arms HP22 or 25 (if they're still in business), a S&W Hammerless Safety top break revolver, or a Nagant revolver. Maybe a few other obscure guns that I forgot to list, but that's about it. Of those, the Hi Point is the one I would go with. You'll have a choice of .380, 9mm, .40, and .45.

YOUR BEST BET, however, is to save up a bit more and move up to a Ruger or Taurus. If you want anything different, you're looking at $500+ for a Glock, Sig, S&W, or any make of 1911.

P.S. Add to the list of "guns in that price range" the entire Jennings line of pistols and then try to forget they exist.

P.P.S. Don't forget Tokarevs. Just have fun paying for 7.62mm ammo that isn't corrosive or been sitting around since Tito's first term as President of Yugoslavia.

Are you 21 or over? Can't buy a firearm unless you are.

CZ52, nagant revolver, Jennings J22, Iver johnson. Take a browse in a firearms shop, they usually have some lower cost entry stuff for around that price.

I would rather stab myself in the eye than tell somebody to get a highpoint.

Save up to buy a real quality handgun. Even at minimum wage it shouldn't take that long to save up the difference to buy something of quality. My service Glock had over 250k rounds through it, was rarely cleaned, and still shot well enough to qualify 249/250 every year. It's why I shoot nothing but Glocks these days.

Sounds dumb but have you shot a fire arm before? Do you have any experience? Do you own any other fire arms? Is this your first fire arm? You cant just go and say I wanna spend this much money on a gun whats the best.... guns don't work that way, you gotta go and put your hand on it first, feel it.... price on a fire arm shouldn't really be a first concern I think. And this site is prob not the best to ask for advice for firearms, might wanna go to a dedicated fire arms forum. (I'm not saying nobody on here knows about gun hahaha)  Go visit your local fire arm retailer!
A guy opens the door and gets shot and you think that of me? No, I am the one who knocks.

Well here is some positive outlook for you, getting into the real gun world is very cool, immaturity is strictly prohibited and frowned upon. So really its more serious and I like it that way. People take there time inspecting the guns before buying usually. And being young and showing you know gun safety and respect towards elders goes a long way.

As far as pricing goes, I would save up, personally now is not the time to be buying guns and ammo(as prices have skyrocketed). Seriously ak47s for $800 now!?!? Anyways Ruger or Taurus 1911s may be your best bet for $500, aything less you will probably get a crap pistol in .40.

Anybody else agree or disagree?

First firearm should be a ruger MKI or II IMO. Shoot a lot and .22 is the way to go. Rugers last damn near forever and hold their value -I see 'em on Backpage all the time for $250-300.

My brothers S&W M&P in .40 was complete shit, but I know plenty of people have them and are happy with them.  I love my Steyr S9 and they are very reasonably priced. Taurus Mil-Pro's are very meh.  Rather heavy and bulky, OK performers.  I'd still take it over a Hi-Point in a heartbeat.  Kel-Tec's are OK.

I personally see no reason for getting a .22.  Ever.  I'd never use one for self defense and I don't find them any more enjoyable to shoot than airsoft.  But that's just me.

Save up your allowance money, and ask mommy & daddy to get you cash for Christmas.
