My question is that if it is just for defense, why does it have to be bigger than a .22? They can do the same deeds for less money.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, wait, were you serious?

Now mace.....mace.... he never said how many.....

Just one. Im pretty sure if a .22 can go through a ballistics vest it can pierce a heart. No im not being sarcastic. And i agree that the round itself is less intimidating, but in a bad situation, i doubt anyone is stopping to consider that its a .22.

A) Level I and Level II armor will stop a .22LR
B) Counting on hitting somebody in the heart is laughable.  Thinking that's going to instantly stop them is more so.
C) A pencil will pierce a heart too, why not just carry that?
D) If you are carrying a gun to intimidate them only, then you're doing it wrong.

We aren't talking about the movies or a video game here.  To get a one hit kill you need to do a sizable amount of damage.

The idea of a criminal using any body armor is laughable. It's not unheard of in home invasions, but then again, you have the option of a shotgun for in the home defense.

Heart shots are almost as laughable, but not impossible as a the body armor bit. I forget the exact number, but I read a statistic that most defensive shootings happen within 3 yards. Any caliber is pretty potent at the range.

Show of hands, who carries a knife with them most of the time?

As far as the .22 is concerned, the LR is a bit lacking all around, but can be crammed into an automatic that is minuscule compared to even a .32 (summer carry, anyone?). The .22 WMR is also getting to be popular in defense geared handguns (Kel-Tec PMR, Taurus revolvers, ect.). Double the case size, double the fun.

The main problem with .22 is that in a defensive shoot situation, there are three main ways that a gun can be used to incapacitate. 1.) By central nervous system hit, 2.) by disruption of critical organ function, and 3.) by loss of blood.  .22 will not be good at any of these functions because it is so small that doing the amount of damage necessary to disrupt critical organ function or cause death by loss of blood is quite difficult, and hitting vital points in the central nervous system is, at least in a defensive shoot situation, pretty much all luck no matter what caliber is used... Unless you're mag-dumping with a Calico...  But who OC's a Calico?... Except me if I ever get one....
