Polarstar G&G L85 Phantom build updated!
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:36:31 AM »
Hey guys, in the process of building this for a customer. Figured it might be of interest to some.

Started out life as a stock L85A2.

The customer requested a phantom style conversion for it, along with a polarstar fusion engine conversion.

Annoyingly, the L85 does not have replacement barrels for sale seperately, and even if I scavenged one from the L85 AFV, the barrel isnt threaded. So I was left with making my own barrel.

For comparison this is what it started out life as (thanks redwolf):

Here is test fitment of the new barrel (made from machining down a 10.5" M4 CQB barrel. Involved fabricating a custom spacer for the tapered part of the barrel where it mates with the front of the receiver, and removing apx. 1/4" of aluminum from the base of the barrel so it would fit into the L85's barrel retainer.
A comparison of the stock brass inner barrel and the stock outer barrel above the receiver, compared to the new barrel.

Next, came the new RAS system the customer specified. He wanted a Vltor CASV-EL, and who was I to say no? Had to machine down a few parts here and there to get it to fit, but I think the finished product looks pretty good. This is NOT the finished product silencer, that is just one I had laying around to show as a proof of concept. Also I have not painted parts that had to be machined yet so you can see some bare aluminum sticking out here and there in the photos.

Painted an Eotech matte green to match the green furniture already on the gun to balance it out a bit. Also started test fitment of some custom brackets to mount the Polarstar Fusion engine into the body.

Here is the modified trigger and switch:

Custom select fire switch to retain stock external fire selector:

And here she is:

Updated:

Had some issues with the FE, ended up having a pinhole leak in an internal hose. Here is the final, final product:

And lastly, a short video of its operation:

Nice great job! Did you have to do major modifications to the FE?

Oh they did? The only one I saw on their website was a gbb one with a mag converted to HPA tanks. Not the full FE.

Just checked and all I found was a Gbb converted for a HPA.

Yea, no one has done a polarstar conversion.. They took an off the shelf GBB and drilled and tapped the magazine and put HPA into the magazine instead of Greengas.

The engine had to be stripped down almost completely til it was basically just the FE's cylinder components, then had to make 3 custom brackets to hold the various pieces securely in place, while retaining the ability to still take out the FE somewhat easily in case you need to do routine maintenance.

Did a bit of modding to the inside of the CASV-EL rail system today and installed the rifles actual suppressor today. The downward sloping angle of the lower receiver really plays tricks on your eyes in terms of how things line up, and the fact that the barrel leaves the upper receiver at such a low point on the rifle it really provides an odd optical illusion at some angles about the alignment of the barrel compared to the optics.

Anyway, here it is, in its final exterior appearance. Still working on soldering the circuit board for the trigger and select fire assemblies.

How much did it cost to have him do all of that?

I'd rather not say. But nuke can tell ya if he wants. I guess you can say it costed a shiny penny.
