Star M249 Para Review Short and Sweet
« on: January 01, 2006, 07:24:59 PM »

Light weight plastic body- could not believe how light it was out of the box

Auto winding - The box mag is self-winding, a function which is linked to the trigger. Pulling the trigger is all you need to do to fire all 2500 rounds. No manual winding is required and there are no separate buttons to press to wind the mag.

Anti-reversal latch release button - The gearbox features a handy button which releases anti-reversal latch, letting the piston fall to rest. This is a great feature since the gun is full auto only, it gives you a way to make sure the main spring is at rest when you're done using the gun

Polycarbonate gearbox - Made of thick, light weight, transparent polycarbonate, the gearbox shell is one of the guns most interesting features. Because it's transparent, diagnosing problems is easy. It's made of polycarbonate (the same material used in bullet-proof glass) so it's sure to be strong while staying light weight

FPS - Good out of the box FPS, between 330-335 with .20g BBs.

Carrying case - A 'Pelican-esque' plastic carrying case is included with every gun

Hop up adjustment - sucks in my opinion, I needed to have it adjusted and was unable to do it on the fly

Over all I was impressed with the performance of the M249 . Only issues I had out the box was Hopup and the Box mag power feed cable sometimes failed to maintain positive contact causing the M249 not to fire

future upgrades will included SP120 spring to bring FPS up to 380s and new piston head

After about 2000 rds this weekend everything looks to be in tiptop shape
NO cracks or sign of premature wear

I had a 8.4 1800 mah that went dead after around 2000rds

Accuracy, hard to say due to the field we played on lots of brush It was dropping short due to the hop up not being adjusted

It feels light and strong, Now I wouldn't use the carry handle to carry it, all the hard use items of the AEG are made strong, there are some cheap flimsy parts. I am sure there's going to be after market up grades later on down the road

Nikki carried one most of the day Saturday and owned a few people with it... she said once she figured out the range she loved it.  I think she even took Dave out ...   good thing Mikey had that frag huh??

Its light, plastic, and looks not quite like the real thing, but then again this IS airsoft and not army... still, I'm looking at the CA for her since she seems to like the SAW for some reason....    would that ber HER birthday present or MINE ?

When it first came out I asked STAR if they planned on putting out any accessories for it other than the gearboxes.  They said that they'll sell the Para stock and fullstock, and the box mags.  No metal accessories or anything like that, as they wanted this to be a economic atlernative to the TOP and CA versions...

Guarder has no plans for a metal receiver specifically designed for the STAR M249 either.

But I wonder if the TOP or CA receiver would work?

They don't like replying to my emails haha.  But KA makes awesome stuff.

G&P doesn't like me much either.

There seems to be a metal gearbox for it already (which seems odd since the plastic gearbox is one of its selling points):

I'm curious as to how much the box mags and gearboxes are going to be.

Did you get yours from Airsoft GI, gixser?

Nice review I have been curious about these since I first read the press release announcing their production.

Excuse my ignorance, as I have not had the opportunity to see the inside of the STAR Box Mag yet. However, on both the Top & CA there is a channel inside the Box Mag large enough to hold a 9.6 3300 mah. Typically I can get 3,000+ to 4,500 rounds depending on which spring is in the gun.

I bought mine from Redwolf I paid 390 plus shipping (wholesale  discount)
shiping was 69.00.

And yes you can put a larger battery in the Boxmag. I wanted to try the smallest battery first ;)
