silencers, useful or useless?

Silencers seem to be a hot item amongst airsofters... but why? I think they're useless for airsoft and only make your weapon longer.

Supressors do quiet the muzzle report from AEGs, but just slightly. Some people like to run their barrel to the end of the weapon, for whatever reason(why not just get a longer gun?). Sometimes, they just look fuckin' cool! I have never owned a supressor for any of my guns, ever.

i bought my gun used, it's an M4 that had an M16 barrel with a silencer to cover the end. I bought an M4 6.03 (363mm long) from mad bull and a standard flash supressor and it works just as well as the systema M16 6.03 (509mm long). I honestly think it looks better without the silencer and now my gun is 6 inches shorter... if only i could do something about the fixed stock....

alot has to do with personal preference with airsoft. of course, i'm not here to bash a preference, i was just wondering if there were more reasons people had besides looks?

i never thought it would really silence an airsoft anyway... being that most of the sound comes from the reciever from the motor and the piston

If you silence the receiver portion (using any of a variety of methods...) then an actual foam-packed silencer will take what little remains of the gun's report away.

I used to be a airsoft silencer skeptic for aegs... that all changed when my buddy bought a p90 tr and showed me the difference between them, even from 10 feet away there was a definate sound reduction.

I think that aesthetics/cosmetics play a larger role in why people put suppressors on their weapons than actual decible reduction.  Nothing wrong with that.
