Scope eye relief questions.....
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:12:36 AM »
Alright guys. I'm planning on buying about a 4x magnification scope for my mp-5. If anyone is all like "its an smg y wud u do that?! derp!" I don't wanna hear it... I've got an 363mm tightbore etc.... 375fps w/ 0.25g's. It's a field gun.

Now my question is about eye relief. Most of the scopes I'm looking at either have an eye relief of around 3" or upwards of 10"... Now on an AR platform or a sniper, a 3" would be perfect, as you can get your eye closer or the scope further back on the rail. On a "scout" styled optic mount such as on a m14 carbine, or on a pistol, 10" or more is needed. I feel like the mp5 is in the awkward middle.... Around 6" or so from my eye to a scope. I don't want to get a scope with a too small of an eye relief which would give me a smaller picture, and I don't want too high of an eye relief and get a picture that moves a ton when I move my eye slightly.

Before someone calls out me for being anal, I'm an Optical Sciences major. Still learning, so school me if necessary. I haven't messed around with a ton of scopes, just know the principles behind them....

So I'm wondering if anyone here with a scoped mp-5 or g-3 has found a scope that works well. As of now I'm leaning towards getting a scope with a higher eye relief, but would appreciate any input.

Thanks!  8)

I was going to suggest something like this, but I don't think your MP5 has enough space to mount it all, you might barely have enough.

Also what are your goals with the scope, are expecting to use it to put down precision fire from long distance or are you using it simply to spot people?

I'm going to use it for precision. I'm not a fan of mp5 iron sites.... I usually stick to semi auto or short bursts with the midcaps I have.
Also, although the setup you linked to is real nice, it's also super expensive.
Anyways, I resolved my eye relief question by asking my optics lab instructor. I'm getting a scope with a higher eye relief, around 10".

Thanks anyways!

That setup is real steel is why it's expensive. EOTech sells their magnifiers for something like $500+, but they're literally the only company that makes magnifiers that break $200. You can get a Primary Arms or Mako flip-to-side magnifier for, like, $110. It's still a bit pricy, but better than $900 for the EOTech setup. And then you can buy a replica EOTech or Aimpoint for... what, $50? Not entirely sure, I've never priced those.

Most of the EOtech sites I've seen are 100-120. Right now I'm looking at something like this..... http://www.opticsplanet.net/ncstar-pistol-long-eye-relief-scope-4x32-pistol-scope-blue-ring-spb432b.html

Or this one with lower magnification. http://www.opticsplanet.net/ncstar-illuminated-pistol-long-eye-relief-scope-2-5x30e-blk-pistol-scope-blue-ring-se.html

Also, Fresnel. Your forum name caught my eye for it's relation to optics  ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel

Scratch those ideas.... I think I might go with this adjustable power scope.... I'll be able to buy a scope mount for the rear sight of my Mauser too...

Long eye relief. Gl shouldering that weapon.

Curious what scope you ended up with? What mount are you using? I should put something on my HK eventually.

Well. I ended up scoring a deal on a red/green dot. So that is what is now residing on the top of my mp5. I'll post a pic this Friday. I have a real steel H&K rail mount and a cantilever mount on that.

Gotcha.. just for reference sake, Ive always used short eye relief rifle scopes on my mp5's and G3's. Unless its an MP5K and you use the SAS's shooting style (they push the gun out away from their body until its tight against the sling), you'll have a hard time with using a pistol scope.

Nah I took that off. I decided I want to fit a lipo in the front handguard, and also I wanted a vert grip for more control.
