Real Firearms / Situational Awareness
« on: March 27, 2009, 10:46:30 AM »
We should remind ourselves to always be armed (legally of course) and always aware of our surroundings and potential threats.  Can you deploy your weapon while seatbelted in your vehicle?  Are you looking for threats?

The Arizona Republic

An unborn child died Thursday afternoon after the pregnant woman and a man were shot while leaving a shopping complex on Baseline Road and 51st Avenue in Phoenix.

The victims were traveling in a white SUV near a Starbucks Coffee and Cold Stone Creamery about 12:30 p.m. when the shooter approached the vehicle, fired into it and fled, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Police were unsure whether he approached the SUV on foot or in another vehicle, Thompson said.

The 31-year-old man inside the SUV had multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and arm. Injuries to the woman, 26, were not disclosed by police. However, both victims' injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, Thompson said.

He said investigators are treating the case as a homicide due to the death of the unborn child. The mother was five months pregnant.

One of two suspects was described as a Hispanic male between 20 and 24 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and 145 to 180 pounds. He had short hair and was seen leaving in a light-colored, possibly teal or green, Nissan sedan with a partial Arizona license plate of A10 or A01.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

My heart goes out to the victims.  Now I am going to the range for some P&P.

Real Firearms / Firearms Law Seminar by NRA

https://www.nrafoundation.org/lawseminar/

This program is written to an attorney audience so do not expect any remedial constitutional discussions.  The program probably is not for everyone because of the cost ($150 for non-lawyers and $75 for military or LEO) and the technical aspects of some of the discussion BUT if you have an interest in how the legal community is facing the post Heller firearms issue then this is the place to be.

Two men were in custody Tuesday morning after police said they crashed their vehicle into one home, attempted to hide inside another, and had gunshots fired at them.

Phoenix officers received a call shortly before 3 a.m. of a possible burglary. The callers stated that someone was inside their home, at 75th Avenue and Camelback Road, and the family was locked in a bedroom, according to a press release from the Phoenix Police Department.

When officers arrived, they saw that a car had crashed into the living room of the home. Officers then heard gunshots south of the house before receiving a call about a second home, a block south on College Drive. The caller said that two men had forced their way into the home and were attempting to hide inside, the release said.

Lesson learned ?  Don't fingerfuck your weapon until you are ready to fire.

From the Arizona Republic:

Chandler police have opened an internal-affairs investigations after two officers accidentally fired their guns at different times while searching for a suspect in Friday's early morning stabbing.

One officer fired his gun in the early morning and the second in the afternoon, both during the search for a man police said stabbed his ex-wife's boyfriend at a residence northeast of Cooper Road and Hunt Highway, said Detective David Ramer.

Ramer called the accidental shootings "very, very rare" and declined further details citing the internal investigation.

"It's very unusual to have two in one day - it's unusual to have one," he said. "But it's one of those things where you learn from it and move forward."

He did not know what the bullets hit after they were fired or at what point in the search each of the discharges happened.

"The important thing is nobody was hurt," Ramer said.

BOISE, Idaho- Idaho members of a group that advocates for the right to openly carry handguns in public are turning heads by touring Zoo Boise while packing guns on their hips.

Ten members of OpenCarry.org were allowed into the zoo Saturday after some initial confusion at the entrance about whether it was legal to bring an unconcealed handgun inside.

Group member Carol Schultz of Nampa says: "Coming to the zoo was something we could do together, like any family would."

Schultz says she's never without her handgun that she keeps in a holster attached to a heart-studded belt.

Real Firearms / Bye Bye Gun Bans!
« on: June 26, 2008, 09:50:01 AM »
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a constitutional right to keep guns in their homes for self-defense, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun control in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms restrictions intact.

The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791. The amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.

The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington's requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks or kept disassembled, but left intact the licensing of guns.

Scalia noted that the handgun is Americans' preferred weapon of self-defense in part because "it can be pointed at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials the police."

In a dissent he summarized from the bench, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that the majority "would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons."

He said such evidence "is nowhere to be found."

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a separate dissent in which he said, "In my view, there simply is no untouchable constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to keep loaded handguns in the house in crime-ridden urban areas."

Joining Scalia were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas. The other dissenters were Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter.

Gun rights supporters hailed the decision. "I consider this the opening salvo in a step-by-step process of providing relief for law-abiding Americans everywhere that have been deprived of this freedom," said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association.

The NRA will file lawsuits in San Francisco, Chicago and several of its suburbs challenging handgun restrictions there based on Thursday's outcome.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a leading gun control advocate in Congress, criticized the ruling. "I believe the people of this great country will be less safe because of it," she said.

The capital's gun law was among the nation's strictest.

Dick Anthony Heller, 66, an armed security guard, sued the District after it rejected his application to keep a handgun at his Capitol Hill home a short distance from the Supreme Court.

"I'm thrilled I am now able to defend myself and my household in my home," Heller said shortly after the opinion was announced.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in Heller's favor and struck down Washington's handgun ban, saying the Constitution guarantees Americans the right to own guns and that a total prohibition on handguns is not compatible with that right.

The issue caused a split within the Bush administration. Vice President Dick Cheney supported the appeals court ruling, but others in the administration feared it could lead to the undoing of other gun regulations, including a federal law restricting sales of machine guns. Other laws keep felons from buying guns and provide for an instant background check.

White House reaction was restrained. "We're pleased that the Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment protects the right of Americans to keep and bear arms," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.

Scalia said nothing in Thursday's ruling should "cast doubt on long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons or the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings."

In a concluding paragraph to the his 64-page opinion, Scalia said the justices in the majority "are aware of the problem of handgun violence in this country" and believe the Constitution "leaves the District of Columbia a variety of tools for combating that problem, including some measures regulating handguns."

The law adopted by Washington's city council in 1976 bars residents from owning handguns unless they had one before the law took effect. Shotguns and rifles may be kept in homes, if they are registered, kept unloaded and either disassembled or equipped with trigger locks.

Opponents of the law have said it prevents residents from defending themselves. The Washington government says no one would be prosecuted for a gun law violation in cases of self-defense.

The last Supreme Court ruling on the topic came in 1939 in U.S. v. Miller, which involved a sawed-off shotgun. Constitutional scholars disagree over what that case means but agree it did not squarely answer the question of individual versus collective rights.

Forty-four state constitutions contain some form of gun rights, which are not affected by the court's consideration of Washington's restrictions.

The case is District of Columbia v. Heller, 07-290.

Real Firearms / Accidental Pulling the Trigger

Excpet Glocks dont have "accidental discharges."  You HAVE to pull the trigger before the 3 internal safety system disengage.

He pulled the damn trigger - the weapon fired - he is a fucknutt....

Personally I keep a trigger block in mine "just in case" and it takes no extra time to deploy and fire the weapon.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - A firearms instructor in southern Massachusetts has been assigned to other duties after his gun accidentally went off while he was teaching a class on weapons safety.

Officials say the Glock handgun discharged while Maj. Donald Lamar was demonstrating to Bristol County deputy sheriffs how to safely holster the weapon.

The bullet ripped a hole in Lamar's pants but missed his leg and foot.
Sheriff Thomas Hodgson says the officer made a "gross error in judgment" by not emptying the weapon before the class last week.

Lamar, a certified firearms instructor since 2005, was transferred to another division and will not carry a firearm while the incident is being investigated.

Chandler municipal code prohibits anyone within city limits from possessing or carrying weapons, air guns, BB guns, slingshots or bows and arrows, except on private property.

Actually, it doesn't so prohibit - and even if the city municipal code purported to prohibit possession or carrying weapons within the city limits, State Law trumps.

The AZ CCW laws specifically state that no subdivision of the state (City, County, HOA, etc) can legislate or otherwise restrict the CCW rights.  I can carry my weapon concealed ANYWHERE in the State except those locations identified in the statutes (bars, schools, etc ... ). [Side Bar - only firearms are prohibited in those locations and since the Az CCW permits the holder to carry ANY weapon concealed a CCW holder may carry a baton, taser, or any other lawfully possessed weapon in bars, schools, etc .. except courthouses and government facilities that prohibit "weapons."]

Private Property IS THE ONLY place weapons can be "prohibited" and then only by the property owner.

But back to the story ... minors with airsoft guns = bad reporting = increased ignorance = more silly laws = ....

General Off-Topic Discussion / December 15 2007 Wreaths Across America
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:32:14 PM »
On December 15, 2007, at 0900, a Wreaths Across America ceremony will occur at the National Cemetary on North Cave Creek Road.

The Wreaths Across America website is located at:

http://www.wreaths-across-america.org/

Cadets and Officers from the Civil Air Patrol will be out all day placing wreaths but there is often a lack of active, reserve, and guard soldiers and airmen.  It is prefered that a member of the fallen service member's branch of service place the wreath.

If anyone wants to help, please PM me for details.  You would have to be in uniform (no airsoft uniforms obviously) but its a great program and time well spent.
