Explorer madness
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:58:29 PM »
So I'm checking my email (I have MSN DSL) and all of a sudden, IE just starts to open window after window.  In about 10 seconds, I have like 60 blank windows of IE open on my computer.  I just restarted the computer becuase there was no way to catch up.

This  used to happen often with my old POS computer, and I thought it was just a problem with that particular computer.

Has anyone else had this problem?...and no, I don't go to porn sites like most of you. :x

Yes... but Firefox is better at blocking pop-ups.  Are you using some sort of integrated e-mail client?  If not, you could prolly just check your mail from outside the MSN browser and just minimize or close it.

Not sure if these are pop ups...it's like the browser just opens over and over again.  Blank screens...the MSN Premium has a really nice browser that I like anyways.

Firefox does not just open over and over again, aside from having superior pop-up blocking.  Same thing goes for Opera, too.  Methinks that makes it more premium than MSN Premium.

It could just be a virus or a really nasty piece of spyware. I mean even Firefox gets a piece of spyware every once in a while.

It happened upon checking e-mail, so methinks it might be an XSS sploit or some script that would launch from an html e-mail, not a compiled piece of spyware.

Its a deep rooted Virus. I had the same issue months ago, just got worse by the day, Start backing up your files now,
One way to tell for sure is try to roll back your system 3-4 days ago. If your system wont rollback then you been infected bud!

I had this problem a while ago and and I had to get into safe mode and do a complete system restore back to the day I got it and that fixed it after it was majorly screwed up.

It still takes a little bit more than that. At work I install Adaware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Spyware Guard. I make sure McAfee is set to auto-update and that the latest virus definitions are installed. Otherwise McAfee becomes pretty much useless. Additionally its always a good idea to have a backup anti-virus to catch what the other one misses. You might want to google Clamwin and NOD32.

Even then you might have to take some extra steps to eradicate a particularly annoying virus, you might want to toy with the registry if you suspect a virus has embedded itself in there. Or I guess find someone who is experienced in navigating the registry to do it for you.

http://housecall.antivirus.com - free and has a spyware component.

We used to recommend this on the M$ phone lines all the time - it tends to catch stuff the others don't.

ANY A/V and Spyware app can only catch 80% at best of anything. Pays to have another avenue of protection.
