PDA email setting help
« on: April 07, 2008, 02:52:41 PM »
I just picked up a Nokia E-series PDA and have internet service.

I'm having trouble with the incoming and outcoming (POP?) email settings.

current incoming mail server settings: pop.mail.msn.com?

current outgoing mail server settings: smtp.msn.com?

Not sure if any of those are correct.

Any help would be great.

thanks,

Benn

I come up with:

pop3.email.msn.com
smtp.email.msn.com

If you have an ISP such as Cox, they require you to use their SMTP server, in which case the SMTP server would be smtp.west.cox.net.  Also check this:

Quote
# Select the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
# Click More Settings.
# Click the Outgoing Server tab, and then select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
# Click Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
# Click OK.

Click Test Account Settings to verify that your account is working. If there is missing or incorrect information, such as your password, you will be prompted to supply or correct it. Be sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
# Click Next, and then click Finish.

Not sure if it is a pop3 or SMTP.  I have ATT.

Are both the incoming and outgoing mail settings the same?

POP3 is used for incoming; and SMTP is used for outgoing mail.

What may be the issue is that MSN may use other than the standard TCP/IP port assignments for mail (like Gmail does). Typically Port 25 is used for SMTP, and port 110 is assigned for POP3 traffic. This can change to prevent port forwarding spamming.

Tried to check the MSN settings for ya, but the proxy at work blocks most forums....

XavierMace's settings should do the trick.

A lot of "public" email sites have been going to secure POP and SMTP. Check to see if you should be using it.

Thanks everyone, but for some reason, it still won't access it.

Does it give you an error or just nothing happens?

nothing happens.  it just tries to connect (MEdia.net) and then just goes back to the screen that says "no messages".  i can get online and go to the hotmail website and check it from there, but that is a pain.

Nope, just the basic "PDA" package deal (30.00/month).

Here are pics of my settings:

The only thing I can think of is that MSN isn't a POP3 server.

Here is the device I own (sold mostly overseas):

I'd like to be alerted about incoming emails (options set to do so already).

thanks everyone. :)

The book that comes with the phone, all 120 pages, does mention "nokia care online".  They may be able to send me the proper settings.

We'll see. :?

Try sending an email from the phone.  I was to determine if it's just the pop server thats not working or the email entirely.

Try this:
Quote
Send Hotmail welcome message
When your account is activated you receive a welcome message to your phone via SMS. The phone number of the message is the MSN Hotmail service number. It is important to save this SMS or add the number into your phone's address book or phone directory.

1. Sign in to your account.
2. Under MSN Hotmail click "Receive Hotmail service message"
3. Your number will be sent to the mobile phone number you used to sign up for the service.

Also:
Quote
Create new device
If you change your mobile network service provider, you can register the new device with MSN Mobile by creating a new device.

To create a device:
1. Log onto your account
2. Under My account click "Change device information"
3. You will be directed to screen requiring the following information:

    * Wireless service provider Note: only carriers that are supported will appear on this list. Carriers not listed are not supported at present.
    * Mobile phone number Note: your country code is not requested.
    * You will be asked to accept terms and conditions for your particular carrier including cost information for this service.
    * A confirmation code will be sent to your phone that you will be prompted to enter into the website. Once your account has been created you will be ready to use mobile Hotmail.
