How Arizona heat ruined gas mags
« on: September 04, 2011, 10:21:48 AM »
So after last weekend's game, my 1911 was left in my vest, which was subsequently left in my car's trunk.  I had forgotten about it, so it sat there cooking for a week.

When I had retrieved it this morning, I found that my mags wouldn't slide in and out of my gun smoothly anymore...  I had to actually yank it out of the gun with an incredible amount of force.  At first I thought my gun was dirty and proceeded to clean it.  That didn't help.  It then occurred to me that, if the gun was dirty, it would've felt grainy pulling it out with changes in the amount of friction as a function of the magazine's location within the pistol.  What I felt was different: a constant resisting force not correlated to how hard I pulled or where the mag was in the pistol.  It was as if the mag got bigger.

And then I realized there was still propane in the gas.  A lot of it.  Almost full with propane because I didn't use my pistol last game.
Which means through Arizona's immense heat, the propane which was left in my 1911 gas mags had so much pressure that it actually warped my magazines.  Using calipers, I found that the magazines left in my car were 3 millimeters bigger than the ones in my room.

So moral of the story: don't ever leave your guns in the Arizona heat for extended periods of time.
I need to buy 2 new 1911 magazines.

Ouch yeah I've never left anything gas filled in my car for that long. Usually I catch it when the valve is just sticking out some and all I need to do is replace the valve, but I've never seen it warp before. Its a good thing they didn't go off or anything huh?
