Hello from the West Valley
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:04:04 PM »
My name is John.  I joined here so I could learn a little about gas blowback pistols.  Don't own any guns yet.  Other than that, I'm just your run of the mill working stiff.

Thanks!  I'm on ArizonaShooting, so I assume the two boards are very similar.  I see a lot of folks from that site on this one.

I doubt I'll ever be shooting with anyone simply because of a lack of time.  Then again, who knows?  Looks pretty interesting. I appreciate the welcome and advice though.

Mostly what I want to see is what types of durable 1911 style GBBs are available, as well as a Glock 34/35 type gun for a second purchase.  I was interested in having these for days when I can't shoot a regular 1911 or Glock.  On my days off my wife works, so having a GBB gun to shoot in the garage or backyard would be nice.  I want guns that will feel the same as my real firearms.

I had seen a USPSA shooter using a WE Tech gun, but I've read both good and bad about them.  If they are decent as long as they are well maintained, I would buy one, but I don't want to buy cheap and have a gun that doesn't last.  I'm fairly experienced working on regular firearms, so I'm happy to learn about GBB guns.  With regards to durability, I'll be shooting it a couple times a week.

So, these are my concerns:

-Are the WE Tech guns durable if well lubed and maintained?
-Is there a local shop in Phoenix or the west valley that has supplies (gas, parts, etc)?
-How loud are these things (as loud as a surpressed .223 for instance)?

I know you are on the west side of town, but I would recommend heading over to the gearbox on McClintock and Southern in Tempe. Ron has a few pistols on display and can answer most of your questions, they also carry parts for various GBB pistols.

I have had the same gas pistol that I got second hand for more than 4 years now. Most, if treated well will last a long time. O-ring seals on mags will degrade but are easily replaced. Build quality is nowhere near a nice non-airsoft handgun but it is a toy gun.

You don't get the supersonic crack like you would with a .223 supressed. They are loud enough to disturb people in the next room but not terribly loud.

As far as a reliable manufacturer... that depends on your care of them. These tend to be higher maintenance than any other gun I've owned (GBB vs NBB, AEG, Spring). Take care of your seals, don't store your mags empty, etc., and you'll be good. I've heard many good things about Maruzen (typically producing 8mm guns and more film prop types, but good quality overall), Tokyo Marui, KSC/KWA, KJW, and WE.

Now, your questions shortened, with shortened answer ;)
Q: Are WE's durable if well lubed/maintained?
A: Yes, any gun is (from my experience). WE's tend to be pretty picky about having a cold magazine though, as well as are best run with red gas due to having a heavier slide (mainly on the larger platforms such as the .45 ACP Silver Dragon).

Q: Local shop in the west side?
A: None that I know of that are as reliable as Ron at Gearbox. Ron is my only "go-to" guy, or any of his guys at the shop.

Q: How loud are they?
A: Loud enough to get some attention while shooting it in your front yard hahaha. I get some looks from time to time, but no one ever questions since these things run rampant in my neighborhood. Also, They seem to be as loud as your standard AEG (decibel wise). I wouldn't say they're loud, and I wouldn't say they quiet like a NBB. Rack the slide and let it fly forward, then imagine about ten BB guns (regular, not airsoft) going off at that same moment. Kinda sounds like that to me haha. It's the best comparison I can give without doing some experimenting :)

Otherwise, hope that helps a bit. Also, welcome to A.A.!

What style of .45 are you looking for? If you dont mind the new "tactical" look alot of the new WE KWA and Socom gear .45 models are nice, solid, and sturdy like the real .45. The latest WE/KWA even have working grip safetys below the beaver tail. My choice would be KJW or KWA, but im also interested in a govt. model. WE seems to be picky sometimes, my experience with a luger of theirs keeps me away.

Command Post on 17 and Bell has 1911's and Glock's. The guy who works there (I forgot his name) is really nice, and, if you're lucky, there will be the sweetest English Bulldog you will ever see walking through the store.

mp5 fan2, thanks for the offer.  I wil likely take you up on that.  For the rest, thanks for the warm welcome and all the advice.  It sure is a friendly group here.

I think I'll end up getting a WE gun soon here, simply because it's cheap enough and like how they look.  I found a Para P14 that almost exactly replicates one of my real guns.

I can't wait to learn more about airsoft.  I didn't think I would find it so interesting, but ever since gixser13 showed me some of his guns a couple years ago I've been thinking about getting some guns.  I have a ton more questions, but I'll do more browsing on the site.  Again, thanks everyone!
