Chandler police have opened an internal-affairs investigations after two officers accidentally fired their guns at different times while searching for a suspect in Friday's early morning stabbing.
One officer fired his gun in the early morning and the second in the afternoon, both during the search for a man police said stabbed his ex-wife's boyfriend at a residence northeast of Cooper Road and Hunt Highway, said Detective David Ramer.
Ramer called the accidental shootings "very, very rare" and declined further details citing the internal investigation.
"It's very unusual to have two in one day - it's unusual to have one," he said. "But it's one of those things where you learn from it and move forward."
He did not know what the bullets hit after they were fired or at what point in the search each of the discharges happened.
"The important thing is nobody was hurt," Ramer said.
