Refinishing without paint?
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:25:18 PM »
Anyone have any experience with refinishing guns? I've got an M60 that I bought used that's all scratched up that I want to sand down and refinish. Is this a process I can do at home or is it something I will have to find someone else to do?

Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do it at home, but if you're sanding it down it requires you to paint it with at least a clear. I paint guns out of boredom all the time.

I want to do it without paint. Something like an anodized finish.

If you have the stuff to anodize the metal then you can do it, but that's expensive.

How does this help? How expensive?

Terreus, you can try to dip the parts in some Oxpho-Blue, and let them stain the metal you're trying to coat. Cheap way of going about it.

If you do the motor oil, it would be wise to coat it with some hard coating, it scratches easily

Yea, hot oil method, needs a protective aftercoat. I edited to use Oxpho-blue, for cold blue process. Make sure you degrease everything before bluing. Gotta make sure that stuff sinks into the metal.

You talking real steel or airsoft? because I know some bluing doesn't like to stain lower quality metals found on some airsoft bodies....

blue finish works only for steel parts but there are plenty of different ways to blue... hot oil, chemical, belgian blue, ect. for aluminum your going to want to use whats called a black finish heres the product http://www.amazon.com/PAB-ALUM-BLACK-TOUCH-3OZ/dp/B000STD3ZC/ref=pd_sbs_indust_7
the finish color will depend on the alloy used so anywhere from pewter to deep black.
