In that clip, the rounds they were pulling out of the box looked much bigger than 7.62. But when they showed the vehicle coming toward the camera, and zoomed in on the gun (looking into the muzzles), it looked like a 7.62 to me....maybe BIG bullets for show?

I think you're right, after looking at it again I think those are .50 cal rounds.

okay, did not know the minigun was e-motor driven. but still, just the expanding gas pushing out the bullet is going to absorb around 15-30 percent of the return force, perhaps more depending on barrel design.

The A-10 does slow down in flight when it fires it's 30mm gun. I've seen it. You would see the gun fire, see the rounds hit, hear the gun fire and then hear the rounds hit.
The AC130, on the other hand, didn't seem to move as much when it fired it's guns. It was farther away though, and they circle thier targets instead of diving at them like an A-10.

Wouldn't this have more to do with the speed of sound than the aircraft slowing down? Perhaps you were just illustrating a related point.

If you are speaking of the 105mm, I think this has to do with the aircraft having a specially-designed pneu-draulic recoil system. I have seen footage of the 105 being fired from inside the a/c, and it DOES travel quite a bit back into the fuselage. Add to that the mass of the 130, and I doubt it's felt that much.

BTW, thanks for sharing that experience.[:)]

If anything the 105 would push the aircraft forward since it's fired out the rear cargo hatch. I think he was referring to the side mounted guns.

The C130's call sign is "Spectre." The AC-130U's call sign is "Spooky. " The U-model is the third generation of C-130 gunships. All gunships evolutionized from the first operational gunship, the AC-47.

AC-130H/U: 40mm cannon and 105mm cannon; AC-130U: 25mm gun

I stand corrected, I only knew of the rear mounted gun.

I've been on these at Hurlburt in FL (my family lives right next to the base), and as far as I know there are NO Spectres with guns out the back, they are all out the side.

Incidentally, they've got a big wooden box on the floor with about 2 feet high sides around the dual 20mms just to catch the brass from the gun. When the gun is firing, the crew chief who was showing me around said they have a guy whose job is to shovel the casings out of the box as fast as he can :)

The way that the A-10s seemed to suddenly "slam on the brakes" wasn't a result of the difference between the respective speeds of sound and light, but yes, the way that we precieved the firing sequence sure was. ;)

Miniguns: READ THIS, n00bs!

Read the part about Predator. (and forgive the grammar, ugh!)

Had this gun being fired using real ammunition, the actor would ended lying on his back, being forced off the legs by the violent recoil.

Interesting stuff. Ya learn something every day.[:)]
