UFC 111 *SPOILERS*
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:13:29 PM »
Who saw the Mir/Carwin fight? People just got a wake up call! I've been saying Carwin is the real deal for over a year, but nooooo. Just ask Frank Mir how the biggest hands in the UFC feel slamming into your head. Lesnar is going down!

If I hadn't, I would ban you.

Put a spoiler alert in the thread title next time. I did this time.

UFC 111 was a pretty decent card. Not sure why GSP has become so lethargic and boring though. His fights look like Antonio McKee fights but nobody bitches because it's GSP. He hardly did any damage other than his submissions which Hardy weathered.

The problem with UFC is the skill divide between it's champions and their challengers.

LW, WW, and MW are all but locked up.

Frankie Edgar, Diego Sanchez (moved back to WW), Gray Maynard, Kenny Florian, BJ Penn

Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Georges St.-Pierre

Demian Maia, Nate Marquardt, Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva

By weightclass. Challengers in no particular order and then the champion. None of the guys can beat the last guy named.

LHW and HW are the only real contested title divisions and LHW has been a revolving door for almost 2.5 years. I have been aware of and behind Shane Carwin for a couple of years now but I still consider him a poor man's Brock Lesnar. He is not as fast, and not as big. His striking is much crisper, probably the division's best BUT as tonight's main event showed us, A+ wrestling will neutralize that every time. Brock Lesnar is probably the best wrestler in the UFC right now.

Whatever - time will tell.

PS - I regard Cain Velasquez as having the biggest hands in the UFC. I have seen them in person. They are big.

The measurement I am talking about is size not power. Shane Carwin's gloves are custom, the same goes for Lesnar. Velasquez is an animal, don't get me wrong. He has power, speed, and endurance like no other heavyweight, however he hasn't had the opportunity to fight someone with superior skills. He is a smart fighter and executes his plans very well. He isn't unstoppable and I would like to see him fight either Frank Mir or Junior Dos Santos. As for me, I'll stick to being a Carwin fan.

Yeah, I saw the fight. I thought the fight was going to end that way but I didn't think it was going to be that fast though.  :)

Mir just stood there and took those shots.  I know it really stuns to be punched, especially by a monster like Carwin, but he ate like 4 uppercuts, then just layed there, I'm pretty sure he was conscious.  GSP did exactly what I thought he would.  Pretty boring.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't.

Losing this fight :

  • Drops him out of every top 5 HW list
  • Cancels his rubber match with Lesnar
  • Strips him of his interim title

And this guy has been fighting for ten years. He knew what was on the line. I do not think he flopped even a bit. Carwin probably weighed 275-280 during the fight.

I have to agree that the GSP fight was boreing. For being "one of the best pound for pound fighters," I haven't seen him finish a fight in a while. Last guy I remember was BJ Penn. But what does that say, that he can beat up a 155lb guy. Yeah I know BJ was the welterweight champion and he also fought at heavyweight agianst Machida, but don't get me started on Penn. GSP is a great fighter, though he may have a dominating performance they are not decisive. As for Carwin, he executed his plan and it worked. I'm pumped to see Lesnar ousted. I don't think he will be able to hang.

Lesnar's days are numbered

As what?

Heavyweight champion?
Biggest draw in the UFC?
The #2 HW fighter in the world?

You might not like him (I am not a huge fan) but to say his 'days are numbered' is retarded. He has a TON more fights in his future.

I can't wait to see lesnar hit carwin with those 15lb sledge hammers hahahahahah I think I'm the only one here who has some faith in him! I hated that GSP just rolled on the ground for like half an hour! Hardy really showed some pain resistance with those arm bars, bet his arm is killing him right now hahahaha!

I think the Lesnar/Carwin fight will be a slugfest. They are both outstanding wrestlers but IMO Carwin has more power. Example: Lesnar punches Heath Herring in the face and sends him cartweeling across the cage. Harring is no slouch. Carwin punches Gonzaga in the face and knocks him out. My chips are on Carwin

Heath Herring's best days were four years ago and he came in out of shape and underweight for fighting Lesnar.

Gonzaga has gotten beat by every top 15 HW he's ever fought (recently; Couture, Werdum, JDS, Carwin). His ONLY claim to fame is a LHK knockout of an aged, failing CroCop.

Here's how Lesnar/Carwin will go at UFC 116.

Staredown, bell rings, no gloves touched, Lesnar rushes Carwin and takes him down and proceeds to get a stoppage by laying on him up against the cage and raining down ineffective but unanswered blows.

Carwin's gameplan as it will be (and as it should be), will be to try and get in as many strikes as he can while Lesnar is attempting to take him down. That will be the difference. I wouldn't say he has only a puncher's chance to rely on, but, I wouldn't say it's too much more than that. Lesnar's speed, size and wrestling are all leaps and bounds above Carwin's. Lesnar also has experience going deep in the rounds. I don't think the fight will make it there, but, I give Lesnar an edge in the championship rounds. As the fight wears on, I think Carwin's survival gets further and further into question.

That being said, I don't see this fight getting past round two.

The line on Carwin is like +195 so I will probably lay a 2 or 3 unit play on him because I like him and I think he should be more like a +110 or +130 dog.

Agreed that Gonzaga and Harring aren't the best of fighters, but they aren't push-overs either. And who knows, maybe Lesnar's game plan was to beat the hell out of Harring for 3 rounds to prove a point??? I suppose we will have to wait till July until this is settled. I would also expect Lesnar to start talking a lot of crap very soon. Don't get me wrong, I like Lesnar, I like what he is doing for the sport, he's always exciting to watch, I just like Carwin better. Anyway it's bound to be one hell of a fight.
