« on: February 01, 2012, 08:30:05 PM »
Sorry if this has been posted before or if I am posting in the wrong section, but I could not find this in " search ". Is it smart to buy only through PayPal with someone or should we only do " local "?

Treat it as an intermediary, one good reason to use Paypal is if you don't really know the buyer. If it turns out that the seller was less than honest, then Paypal has provisions to resolve the problem. However, if it is someone that I've known for a while, then of course cash is usually fine for both parties.

The advantage of buying local is that one will have some place to poke taste and feel, ask questions and insure that your local dealer will prosper and be there when one needs them...Additionaly when one needs repair it is local, buy from ebay and one has no recourse if one has a problem after a month or so...

SUPPORT your LOCAL people they are there for you...

Yea I fully agree. I am all about buying local, but I notice some " for sale " gear on here, and some people will ONLY sell through Paypal and ship the item to you. I was just wondering if that is fishy, or can be trusted. Being most of us are located in the valley

I purchased a Marui G17 from a guy out of stae using PayPal. He claimed that he had all of these great upgrades and that it was shooting 400 fps. When I got the gun it was shooting 310fps and the upgrades were not installed as advertised. I asked seller for refund and he refuse claiming it was fine when he shipped it. Disputed with PayPal and their response was that they only allow disputes on items purchased with buyer protection via eBay. So what I do when I find something I want from a guy I don't know is have him list it as buy it now on eBay with a clear description stating condition of item. I purchase with PayPal via eBay and I am protected. Had one instances latter where another scumbag lied about the condition of the gun again. He refused to refund, I disputed via PayPal and since it was an eBay purchase I got a full refund and the seller had to pay for return shipping.
So if unsure have them list it has buy it now on eBay with all "guarantees" in writing and your covered.

Unless it is buy as it, and no refunds. Paypal will protect the buyer, not the seller if the terms are not fully met. Paypal will shut down the account of the seller, until repayment has been made. Just make sure in writing or text, everything can be negotiated through exchange or refund. Or else paypal cannot do anything for you.

To add some levity to this:

Yes, Paypal will do what they can to protect a buyer (up to and inlcuding shutting down the seller's account). However, if the seller has already removed the money from the account (very possible considering shipping times) Paypal can do nothing for you. If the money is gone, then Paypal is helpless to get it back for you.

Just food for thought. I love paypal, and I use it for most online purchases, but you really have to understand their protection policies, and read carefully.

This thread needs to be moved to the appropriate section not the for sale thread.

When I first started selling online via Paypal they made it so I was not able to remove the money from my account for two weeks or until I got positive feedback and confirmed delivery from a tracked shipment. They left it this way for several months until they realized I always got positive feedback and never had issues with my customers, now I get the money instantly. So if it is a new seller (possibly a scammer) this provision is also in place to protect your money. Still, be careful. And you can always submit someone to the better business bureau, if you really get scammed.

Not true in my case. The guy who tried to rip me off had deleted his PayPal account after taking my money and had even deleted his eBay account which I made him use to list it for me as buy it now. Because of the eBay buyers protection plan whic i insisted he use I was able to get my money back. Not sure if eBay paid then went after him but I got my money back and he then contacted me a few weeks later to ask for his gun back which he had to pay the shipping.
