Can someone please explain ping?
« on: December 06, 2005, 06:57:59 PM »
I am not up on computer/internet terms like I should be, so I need some help with what "ping" is.

I play Joint Ops online, and when I see the game server menus, it lists the ping of each server.  What do the numbers mean?  Should I choose a server with the lowest or highest ping?

On a side note, I can blast away at someone at close range, and yet they can still get in close and kill me with a knife.  Assuming they are not cheating, is there a possible lag that is occuring that is getting me killed?  Can a better video card solve that if that is the issue?

Thanks,

-Vell

Ping is VERY important during online games.  With a high ping others with a better connection to the game host server can run laps around you and you may still see them in front of you on your screen.
You want to join the servers with the LOWEST ping, also known as latency.

Yep, there are two things that are making this happen.  Bad connection to a server ie. high latency or your video card.  Video card might not be refreshing fast enough.

I'm no expert, just my 2 cents.  Hope this helps,
Sin

What kind of video card do you have, and what is the speed of your cpu, how much ram do you have and what operating system are you running?  All these things can affect game performance along with your connection, and type of internet connection when gaming.

Your computer has to send information to the server and vice versa.  It takes time to send this information and it is measured by ping or latency as Rod pointed out. If you have a high ping, that means its taking a longer amount of time for you to send and receive information from the server. Thus you may be Lagging behing in receiving information than everyone esle and this is know as Lag.

Best bet is to go for a server with the low ping, try it out for awhile the if things are still choppy/jumpy/slow you probably need some upgrades for the computer, as said before ram and video card are the first easiest choices.

Line up what the games system requirements are next to what your computer actually has.  If you easily meet the requirements try turning your video settings down a little.

I play Battlefield 2 a lot, and I try not to play on any server I have higher than 100 ping on.

I have a AMD 3000+ 2.01 GHz processor, 512 DDR ram, Radeon 9200 128Mb card, Windows XP Pro.  I want to upgrade to a 256Mb video card, but maybe after the holidays.

AMD 3000+ at 2.01ghz.... Are you an overclocker? As for video cards, the AGP stuff is getting cheap due to the new PCI express cards.

Also, I'm selling a GB of ram for 80 if you want it PM me.

Yes, the lower the ping the better.  To help explain it a bit more:

Your "ping" is how long, in milliseconds, it takes for a packet of information to make a round trip from you, to the server, then back to you. So obviously, if you have a ping of say... 200, and everyone else on the server has a ping of 40, then you're going to have some trouble keeping up. ;)

Go to http://www.dslreports.com - they have a free tool that will allow you to get a fairly accurate test of your u/l and d/l rates.

For the techie types - "Ping" is a UDP packet sent by a client to a server to determine latency on a connection, usually measured in milliseconds. The lower the number, the faster your connect speed. Remember- you may have a fast connect to one place, but another may be slower due to congestion and problems with the hardware between you and your intended target.

I use http://www.liveping.com/initialmeter.php for ping test

I used it and it says:

"Your current bandwidth reading is:

4.45 Mbps

which means you can download at 570.1 KB/sec. from our servers.

28.8 kbps dial-up
33.6 kbps dial-up
53.3 kbps dial-up
56 kbps ISDN
128 kbps ISDN
384 kbps DSL
768 kbps DSL
1000 kbps DSL
1500 kbps DSL/T1/Cable Modem
4560.8 kbps YOU"

According to the bar graph next to the readings, I am doing pretty good.
