« on: June 09, 2009, 05:07:32 PM »
I am not sure about you guys but in the past week or 2 there has been alot of spamming on this site, with Viagra sites and Porn, Being of 23, I am not effected by this but it really is annoying and I know we do have minors on here we need some kind of verification to stop people like these from spamming out website.

yes I agree.  I think that we should have like a captcha or something to stop thes people from spamming.  It's really annoying to click on new posts and and see pages of spam.

Personally i'm not so much tired of it but rather just amused at the kinds of crazy shit the bot spams because I'm sure all of us are absolutely big fans of German viagra and Bollywood sex films! (haha what)

The question is: what happened to suddenly allow spambots to POST?? Did we get rid of e-mail account verification?  I mean, we're going to GET spambots; welcome to PHPBB!!  But we can stop them from POSTING.  I've been on here for years, and haven't seen this problem until now; what changed?

It might be a security update we missed or maybe the people who program the bots are just getting better at circumventing the CATCHPAs or whatever is being used now for user verification.

That unfortunately has always been a weakness of PHPBB.  It's always been more vulnerable to Spambots than other forms (like SMF or vBulletin).  The issue will only become more common as spambots become more popular.  So long as your security measure are open source, it's only a matter of time before it's bypassed.  The only surefire way to prevent it is have a non-automated approval process.  In other words, admin approval.
