Heard about this incident this morning, very unfortunate that this happened.  I'm sure more information will come out in the coming days.

Just a few tips from a former law enforcement officer when interacting with "the fuzz".
-always follow directions given by the officer
-always address the officer as "Officer" (they like that)
-always show respect for authority
-good idea to transport any kind of weapon (fake or real) in a case if possible
-if an officer approaches while preparing for a game or messing with your gear, set it down, step away from gear and keep hands visible
-even if officer is wrong, on the spot is not the time to disagree or resist, police departments have a process for civilian complaints or court of law depending on situation

Hope you find the above tips useful, it's good to remember that where we play, how we interact with non-players and our conduct at events has an effect on the general public's perception of Airsoft and the people that play it.

Also forgot, Never point your airsoft gun at anyone except the player you intend to shoot, and only during a game.

all good rules to follow here. After reading this article the only thing that really that really has me wondering is why did they have to shoot several times? despite probably being a gut reaction to seeing someone carrying an ak 47 it does sound like a little much.

This is a really sad event that happened and the only thing that I can think of to answer your question is, think of when you are playing airsoft.  Do you shoot just once?  You want to make sure that you hit your target.  Sadly, these officers didn't know if the gun was real or not but if it had been a real ak47, they would've been out gunned with just their handguns.  The young boy didn't listen or respond to their command to put the weapon down.  It's just sad.  I am sorry that a life was taken but I don't blame the officers, in fact I don't think there is anyone to blame.
I want to share a positive situation that I had with some sheriff deputies.  A couple of years ago my friends and I had found an abandoned warehouse and thought it would be fun to clean it up and play.  We knew we were trespassing but we thought we could take the risk.  Well, another group showed up to play paintball and seeing us took off.  Coincidently, about 10 minutes later, two squad SUV's show up.  There were about 15 of us.  We quickly went to our cars and put our airsoft rifles away, took off our masks and walked out to meet them with our hands out.  We were sited but they didn't do more than that and asked us to leave.  I share because even though we trespassed, which I don't condone, it was a positive experience and no one was hurt and no one got in trouble because we respected the sheriff's authority.  If only that young boy had done the same.

Where to start...

Well, first of all, never carry ANYTHING that could be mistaken for a weapon in your hands in public. Period. It's a bad idea. As Edward McRichy said, A GUN CASE IS MANDATORY AIRSOFT EQUIPMENT. Hell, duffle bags, backpacks, and guitar cases will work for compact guns. BLANKETS OR TOWELS ARE NOT ENOUGH!

Cheap gun cases:

$15 + shipping could save your life. Most people have no clue what airsoft is (bring it up in casual conversation with a coworker).

Another thing that troubles me is that a 13 year old was given free reign to carry an airsoft gun by his parents. It's kind of hard to miss an AK47 leaning up against your son's trumpet case in his bedroom. He could have stealthed it in and out of the house, but seriously, that's a lapse in parenting. Giving a kid liberty with something that looks so real is asking for problems.

The gorilla in the room is what the California legislature will do with this.

oh man...makes me wonder how safe it is to play outside..

Shouldn't be a problem, as long as you're on public land outside of city limits or on a recognized field.

Police nowadays are trained to shoot until the magazine is empty, then reload and assess the situation.  This is because they are trained to shoot center mass to down a target.  Within the 3 ways that a target can be successfully eliminated with most common pistol caliber rounds, that being either a central nervous system hit, critical organ hit, or blood loss, blood loss is the quickest and easiest way to put a target down and keep them down, as getting a CNS hit can prove to be pretty difficult.  So they are trained to empty the magazine into their opponents chest, hoping to make as many holes as possible.

..Not to mention it gives a temporarily "lost it!" defense in court.

Three things.. This kid was an idiot.. The cops were spooked, and shouldn't the kid's parents be a mite more responsible? Junior should NOT have been horsing around like that. Should they be held legally liable for this?

Breaking news,

Cops drove up slowly Behind the kid, hid behind there car doors, and yelled at him. All ok, the kid turns around, and they shot him as he began to turn, fearing the rifle.

Kid had the unfortunate disadvantage of not being the bright light, and the cops apparently didn't take the time to analyze the situation. Bad deal either way.

Basically, a sad deal all around, and easily preventable.

I heard today that the cops told the kid 13 times to put down the gun, which he never did. Any information on that? Im not too sure.
