Real or replica helmets?
« on: March 24, 2012, 02:34:03 PM »
I usually use a (real) Marine LWH when I'm out on the field, because I like having some head protection; not from BB's, but I often end up under bushes and running through those super short trees with thorns that grow all over the place.  I also like how solid the construction is.  I've also been wanting a MICH 2001, but as you know, finding one for a decent price (I paid $45 for my LWH, because the seller mistook it for an older PASGT helmet) is very difficult.  So I'm starting to wonder about the replicas on the market... Are they any good?  The kind of thing that could take a little bit of punishment and not crack or fall apart in some way?

I just bought a replica MICH 2001, and I'm liking it a lot. Keeps me from cracking my head on the low ceilings at Sasco, gives me a place to store my goggles if I'm not wearing them, and it also looks bad-ass. Ran me $35 used from another AA member whose name I can't recall, so they ARE out there.

I dont mind the weight of my LWH, but yea lol, that was my main concern; construction quality and all that good stuff.  With that in mind, I'll keep an eye out for something decent!

Honestly I can't tell a weight difference with replicas and real. The chin straps and pads suck in the fakes, switch that out with either a replacement issue set (rangerjoes.com) or go big money and buy a super nice kit. If you get the issue pads do not wash them with soap. The sponge will soak it up and everytime you sweat with it on you'll have tide in your eyes.

Bonus cool points if you spray paint it snake skin.

I've never seen a real version of most helmets, but the kevlar PASGT I fondled a couple weeks back is notably heavier than the fiberglass replica. Probably not enough that you'd feel it immediately with only one or the other, but if you have them both side by side it's obvious.

Oh you, Fresnel... Fondling my kevlar helmet... ;).. I think that was you...
Yep, that was me. As much as I like the idea of kevlar, the PASGT just has too much material on it.

Well, with my resolution absolute at this point to acquire a replica MICH 2001, do you know of any particularly good brands or places to buy from?  I kinda have my eye on one from EBairsoft, since I've got to get a new piston for my M4 from there anyways...

A fondled helmet has more experience and is more skilled in pleasing you.
