UTG MP5 shooting slowly (fps)...
« on: February 05, 2006, 04:42:29 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm still a newbie to airsoft but I purchased a UTG MP5 to get into the sport and decided to upgrade as mentioned on Arnies Airsoft. The problem is that it only shoots ~230 fps after I installed an M100 spring. I am using a chrono that I know works because my Dad's shooting club uses it, and I have a friend with a KJW M9 that shoots a LOT faster. In all I have replaced the O-rings on the piston head and cylinder head, rewired it using 16awg low resistance wire and Dean's connectors, upgraded the battery to a 9.6V 1600mAh one, and installed an M100 spring I got at jungle toy. I have tested the compression on the cylinder, it is near perfect, slight leakage at the nozzle, which I expect is normal, I even disassembled the barrel/hop-up and relubed it and tested it, it is airtight, and he nozzle fits into the hopup chamber tight. I am running out of things to try, the only other thing that I can see effecting the fps would be the spring, maybe defective? If you have any insights I would love to have them, THX in advance

Your first mistake was buying a UTG.

Yeah probably :-P but it should still work in some kind of logical fashion so I'm sure it is something I'm just missing.

I've just finished the same upgrade.  The UTG MP5 is an excellent platform to learn V2 mech box assembly.  I'm also having the same problem and I suspect it may be the hop up, but I haven't found a good post on adjusting/troubleshooting the hopup.  I plan on disassembling it again and see if I can adjust it.
