SPORTS is an acronym to fix your weapon in case of a jam.  Broken down, it's:

Slap magazine
Pull charging handle
Observe chamber
Release charging handle
Tap bolt catch
Shoot

i think that the XM8 will be a good rifle. but doesnt it seem that the super powers around the worl are making their main issued weapons nore and more compact? and more and more like SMGs?

It makes sense if you look at the type of combat that we are involved in. The M16a2 is just too big to be effective in any type of enclosed area. Rick

This wasn't really what I was getting at...It's obvious that the money and logistics mess it would create isn't worth the switch...I was merely asking people's opinions on the two...I did want to know why ORIGINALLY(originally being after m16 was introduced, but perhaps while it was still contesting with the m14 and not widely accepted...or rejected for that matter) they didn't switch to the bull-pup system...but what i was more interested in was everybody's general opinion on the bull-pup vs a more traditional design...

"What about you Pete?" you may, or may not, find yourself asking...Well, I think the bull-pup design is very inovative and the reduced overall length while maintaining of the barrel length shows a true engineering spirit. But, I wouldn't give up my AR-15/M16/M16A1/M16A2/M4A1 FOR ANYTHING!!!...I love that gun(and all of its beautiful variants) and I always will, just as an old WW2 veteran loves his M1 Garand.

Although....in regards to the WW2 vet. analogy, no m16 has saved my life, so i wouldn't quite have the same attachment(Hasn't saved my life YET...I just know in my heart of hearts that one day it will)

I dont know about the bull pup but, i used the M16 in combat during iraqi freedom and besides the required constant cleaning (by constant i mean two to three times a day) it worked great.

Don't forget ammo load-out means a lot too. Smaller cartridges, smaller bullets means lighter loads to pack around.

Well, it's been my experiance that the Powers That Be don't actually lighten your load, they have you hump more of whatever was lightened.

Actually that was part of the thinking in NATO switching to the 5.56. Smaller bullets means you can carry more of them.  

That's also another issue to consider when arguing about what the US military should do.  NATO still mandates 5.56mm, and NATO even likes it if weapons can use the same mag. (Note the F2000 uses an AR mag)

ya lighter ammo just means more of it! what i want to know is why there isnt like a .25 caliber? i think that would be awesome! more stoping power than a 5.56 (.223 cal) stoping power and less kick than a 7.62 (.30 cal)

Thats kind of what the 6.8mm SPC round is. The 6.8mm SPC is a 115 grain round.  By comparison, an SS109 5.56mm (M16 ammo) is 55 grains.

Well there's virtually ever caliber you could imagine, but there are a ton of issues in making a military caliber.

I was talking to Scott Smithers last night and he told me his unit is getting some of the new 6.8mm uppers for their M4's.
