Anti Bot Mod
« on: June 10, 2009, 09:52:32 AM »
Looks like we have a uprising of porn bots now that the mail is working again and activations are taking place.  Here is the mod I used on the TAC boards to 'thin the herd':

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 9&t=645075

Basically its a set of xml instructions that have you create a control panel module in the admin tools that creates a questions and answer box in the registration.  Since scripts rely on the activation form being the basic stock activation form this will trip them up.  Paco or another administrator with access to the phpbb install and rights to edit files will need to apply the fix.  It takes about 10 minutes to complete but will save countless hours in moderating time getting rid of the garbage these things are posting.

Or just require admin approval for new accounts.  That would solve the problem as well.

I like that idea because that would help regulate what kind of users we get. But I have a feeling that's not really what the admin wants. If airsoft were much smaller we could probably get away with a cloak and dagger kind of community, but that isn't the case.

It would take roughly 2 minutes to approve a user.  I can't say I've really checked what our new user sign up rate is, but divided by the number of people we have with mod privs, it really wouldn't be some horrible burden.  Just my thoughts anyways.

Should be taken care of now.

CAPTCHA has been made much more difficult for bots to recognize now.
