DAS REVIEW: S&T MG42
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:29:35 PM »
What does the (Desert) Fox Say?

Dunno, can't hear a damn thing over this badboy!

Howdy ladies and gentleman! Good night, and welcome, to one of the sweetest Squad autos I have held, the MG42!

Yes, I did buy one.

After coming back from east wind last week, I had an overwhelming desire to purchase an MG42 for our BW side to use, the MG42 is the essentially the same as the mg3, and, new sights, already ordered, and a Black stock, will make this awesome dude a new power on the Bundeswehr.

But, I digress.

I wanted an MG42, and I wanted an AEG.

The S&T delivers on both.

The shoei is nice, and high quality, but, it is as its name, kind showy, as in, on the wall.

The "Matrix" Mg42 is 1/4 the price at the time of this writing, and built to play!

Preliminary feeling and shooting, reveal that this gun is made almost entirely of metal, the ad said steel, but, I am not sure, will test.

Anyhow. The gun is amazing! weighing in at right around 21lbs, it sits and shoulders well. It is very long! And can get a bit front heavy, but, is generally very manageable.

It comes in a very well-packaged box, with a full manual.

The box mag is very nicely made, and holds 2400 rounds.

The gun itself appears to be shooting around 25-30 rps with 11.1v lipo, and sounds HOT doing it! Very smooth! much much better shimjob than my M249.

The box mag is auto-feeding, and links to the gun via a wire, as can be seen in the first pic.

I am not sold on this. It looks like it will make feeding a breeze, and be a cool feature, however, it is really just hanging out right in the open, and, the sight of a wire on a WW2 gun is kind of jarring for me.

Time will tell! I will most likely make a second box mag for it using a green drum,  ::), and make it button activated. Then I have both!

The gun itself is on par with the M249 - M60
The externals are solid enough, cool, and look like they are of decent make.
However, many of the screws on mine were loose when I got it. 10 minutes with an allen key solved this.

As far as the body. I don''t know what to say. Its like S&T spent a lot of effort making the parts, and then just slapped them together.
However, this doesn't even bother me. My feed cover was miss-aligned, two allen head screws later, BAM, perfect!

I think much of this is subjective. The gun is put together in a way you can tell it was meant to be massed produced, and I am not sure if this is due to S&T's factory, or the actual gun itself, being designed to be mass produced in 1942!

Either way, though some of the parts are off/loose, all the allen screws are metal, and the same size!  ;)

So, it can be fixed, to your liking, in minutes. To me, its 50/50, it might look a tad off at first, but, on the other hand, here is a gun that is using all uniform parts I can find at a hardware store, vs magic airsoft parts you have to buy direct.

The stock is real wood, and feels great! The battery storage on the stock locks in well, and has loads of room.

Charging handle is meh, but, I expected that, looks absolutely fine!

Main body is ROCK solid

650mm barrel.

This gun, much like the real one, BUZZES when shot. It shoots fast! And I haven't even made it inside yet!

FPS TBD

Bipod is extremely solid, move-able, but flops a bit.

Gearbox is VERY good, for the overall quality of this replica. It is much better sounding then the M249/60s I have heard stock.
I am very 50/50 to see how the gearbox-in-grip turns out. I wanted to put the real sling on the gun, but am holding off for now.

In short. I love this gun! I can't stop playing around with it, and I think it is going to fit in with my needs and expectations perfectly.

It is a budget Metal Mg42. FINALLY! :D

More pics and reviews to come!
I have the tripod inbound as well.

ALSO! It is important to note, just in the construction, and materials, I can definitely see this gun dropping down in price to be more in line with the A&K's soon.

At which time I will buy at least 1 more.

LOVE IT. Come see it at fightertown this Sunday!

Sehr Erotisch!!
9/10

So let me guess, I'll be the one lugging the MG42 and the PZF44 around next year?
