General Airsoft Discussion / Re: azsarge 16 MAR 82 - 10 JUL 10

Fortunately I did know Christian, and I am the richer man because of it. I found out about this yesterday from Ron Bilodeau. I am truly shocked. I've known Christian from the early days of Airsoft Arizona (Mikey knows what I'm talking about) and I can say truthfully that there were few better. My heart goes out to his father and family. A father should never have to bury his son. It is not the natural order of things. So for Christian I offer this simple prayer...

May the Lord look upon you in delight, may He lift up his countenance on you and make His face shine down upon you and give you peace. Amen.

God Bless you Christian, you will be missed.

Real Firearms / Finnish Mosin Nagant
« on: February 28, 2006, 03:32:42 PM »
There are several variations on the Mosin Nagant that you are talking about here. 1st. The Imperial version is the original version (the Model of 1891). This version is typified externally by looking at the receiver geometry. It is octagonal in shape where the barrel shank enters the receiver. The Communist Russians mass produced the rifle prior to WW2 and omitted the octagonal receiver in lieu of a rounded version (easier to machine). This became the 91/30. During the Winter War of 1938/39 (between Russia and Finland), most Russian units were still equipped with the Model 91. After hostilities ceased, the Finns gathered the captured M91's and modified them for there own purposes. These became the Finnish Model 39. The receivers were mostly Imperial (Tsarist) marked items made by the best Russian Arsenals (such as Tula, Ishevsk and Srestroyka). The Finns retooled the receivers and added barrels and trigger groups from Sako, Valmet, Tikka (and in some cases SIG). The Finnish version of the Mosin Nagant rifle is by far the best for shooting accuracy and smoothness of function. While the Communist version is still a good shooter, it cannot even come close to the durability, ease of use and all around utility of it's Finnish counterpart. I personally own two Nagants. One is an Imperial marked, Communist rework of an M91/30, the other is a Finn M39 (with a Sako trigger group, Valmet barrel) built on a Tula receiver that was made in 1897. The whole rifle was reworked by Sako in 1942. It's a real tack driver.

Real Firearms / Look in the bore...
« on: February 16, 2006, 11:09:19 AM »
What he means by looking in the bore is probably determining the actual caliber. The type 99 is the 7mm JAP (or 7.7mm) round while the type 38 is 6.5mm. A simple bore gauge would clear up the issue. Also, if you do intend to shoot the rifle, have it checked by a competent gunsmith first. It also helps to know the caliber so you can buy ammo for the gun. Just a thought.

General Airsoft Game Discussion / Game on the 12th
« on: November 14, 2005, 02:39:54 PM »
Sorry I missed that one guys. I was set to go that Friday night, except when I tested my AEG I got the sickening sound of a stripped piston. I tore the gear box apart and discovered (much to my horror) that not only had the piston stripped, but the tappet was broke as well (although I don't know how that happened). Anyway, new parts are on order. As soon as I get the thing back together, I should be good to go. BTW, the pictures of the game appear to be taken at the Four Peaks AO and not BT. I thought we were supposed to be at BT. Oh well...

Thanks for the props folks. It truly was good being back again. I was away for far too long. I enjoyed the game play out there. From my general observations, it appeared to me as though everyone conducted themselves as professionals. It was good seeing a large crowd. Thanks to Christian for finally showing up. You had a valid excuse... this time. I look forward to seeing ya'll more and more as time goes on. Playing this weekend reminded me how much I love this hobby.

AEG's / G&G vs. TM M14

Here is the thread that was started last month or so regarding this particular subject.

I have two G&G M14's. I love them both.

No work on the gears required. From what I saw (and I didn't try to mess with them too much) they looked stout and robust (similar to CA gears). I just changed the piston head, spring and spring guide. I've shot about two mags thru the gun to verify function (about 900 rds). The barrel change was a different story. At the time, there was no Prometheus barrel being made that was specific to the G&G M14 so I picked up the longest one I could find (about 600 something mm). I had to regrind the hop slot because the stock slot was set about 1.5mm too far foreward. the new hop bucking from AE fit nicely even though I butchered the slot. After reinstalling the hop unit and putting the barrel back in I discovered that the barrel was still about 6mm too short. I took a dremel and ran a groove around the inner barrel and fit a small o-ring to act as a center for the inner barrel in the outer barrel. I greased it up real slick and ran it back through the outer barrel and it seems to work fine. The hop also works real well as it seems to have more surface area to act on the bb (so I don't have to crank it in just to get some hop). It was a task needless to say. So, that being said, I think it will still be some time before G&G has more stuff out that can upgrade the gun.

As cmptrdewd stated, the lion did in fact have it's mouth open. But if you look at the slomo part of the clip, just before the lion starts his jump into the guy in the foreground, the lion takes a hit to the jaw. Its pretty clear that the lion is seriously wounded, even before he makes his mad dash at the shooter. If that were a cat in his full faculties, that guy would have been toast. Just as it is, the lion got one paw on the guys arm to knock him over (he even loses his rifle). Looking at the video a couple of times shows me that this guide was a complete idiot. They were lucky that day.

If you go to the G&G website, they state that all guns shipped after June 2005 are the version 2 guns (I'm not entirely sure if they are calling it version 2 or just a fixed version 1). In any event, Airsoft Extreme indicates that they have the latest iteration. Guns sold prior to June were problematic. They had issues with funky hop adjustment, hop rubber being too soft (and wearing out early), and the trigger interface not making contact with the switch. I agree with you on Marui QC. I have never had a bad Marui gun. I chose the G&G because I believed that the construction was more robust and durable than the Marui model. Personally I like Marui alot. But I have seen tremendous improvements in quality from companies like Classic Army, G&P and G&G in the AEG arena. The longevity and actual durability of the G&G iteration remains to be seen by me as I have yet to actually test this gun in the field. I have only test fired each gun, repaired the known flaws in one of them, upgraded the other, and ran a couple mags through each of them to make sure the things worked right. The end of this month is an AA game. We'll see how well they do in the field at that time. If they're pieces of crap, I'll unload them faster than you can say "I got screwed". In the mean time, let's hear more about the Marui guns. I'm curious how our AA buyers have fared with that one.

AEG's / M14 (Marui or G&G)
« on: August 16, 2005, 06:17:44 PM »
Gentlemen, I've heard alot of hoopla over both the Marui and the G&G version of these rifles. I too am intrigued by the general information (or mis-information) about these two. However, since I was looking for sheer durability and upgrade potential I opted for the G&G version. I own two actually. A version 1 (complete with the problematic trigger spring and switch contacts, bad hop bucking and loose barrel assembly) and version 2 (which corrected all the problems in version 1). Since I fixed the version 1 problems after getting the version 2 gun, I now have two fully functional M14's. The reason why I chose G&G over Marui was the metal body and takedown dynamics. You see, the Marui version (although very stylish and sexy with that cool looking fake wood stock) just didn't have the metal where I thought the metal needed to be (like the receiver, bolt, full length barrel, flash hider, gas cylinder, etc. etc.). The G&G gun has it's barrel attached to the receiver (the way most guns are built) and receives it's strength from the fact that metal is mated to metal (and the stock is merely the interface between user and machine). As far as takedown is concerned, it is really quite simple... with the rifle firmly on the floor with the trigger guard facing up, simply pull up on the trigger guard to release the trigger group from the lower receiver. After the trigger group has been removed, turn the rifle over (holding firmly onto the receiver and stock) and slowly separate the upper receiver assembly from the stock. Push the receiver/barrel assembly forward slightly to disengage the stock from the receiver, then lift the entire assembly (motor, receiver, gearbox and barrel - with plastic upper) off the stock. Also, G&G added a very simple and effective method to relieve the spring tension on the piston. Similar to the method used by ICS on their M4, you take hold of the firing selector on the right side of the receiver and rotate it rearward. That's all there is to it. It's alot more simple than the Marui takedown procedure I read in the review, and they never really address the spring tension release. Now I'm not poking at the Marui iteration of this venerable piece of American history, it's just that it appears as though G&G thought a bit about the marketplace they were planning on soliciting and geared their line towards satisfying this little segment of the airsoft spectrum. I have already upgraded my v2 gun with a new spring (a PDI 170), and a new Prometheus 6.03 barrel. The accuracy of this weapon is stunning. Needless to say, it will serve well either in the support role, or as an interdiction platform. As always, the opinions expressed by me, do not necessarily hold true for the management.

Introduce Yourself! / Old, but new...
« on: August 08, 2005, 02:48:36 PM »
It's kind of wierd, me writing about myself in this forum. Most all of the original AA members know who I am. But I figure there's enough newer (and younger) members and other players who don't know who I am. So, I take pen in hand (or keyboard on desk, as the case may be) to introduce myself to the growing ranks of an organization I love and care about. My name is Curtis Greer. I go by the moniker "TheRev". The reason I am called "TheRev" is because I am a Rev, or Reverend, that is. I am an ordained minister of the Christian faith. But before any of you Jesus bashers out there get your knickers in a knot, I'm not the kind of Christian that jams Jesus down your throat. Quite the opposite actually. I like to lead by example. This thought process goes back to my days in the military (US Army, 1976 - 1989). Now, most of my airsoft activities have been in the planning and logistics arena. While I have not been on the field as much of late (and much to my woe, having missed LC4), I still drop in these forums on a daily basis. I've seen a tremendous amount of change taking place. Some good, some not so good. Needless to say, things can get a little exciting in here sometimes. As a moderator, it is partly my responsibility to see that things stay civil in here, and that's what I do. But I also like to see the pot get stirred up every once in awhile. It's good for soul... let's all the dross come to the surface. Well, you get my meaning (and if you don't... well, it doesn't matter to you anyway). So anyway, just thought I'd say hi, let ya'll know I'm still here.

TheRev

PS  Kyle, are you really coming back? I am newly inspired.

Sheesh, now all we need is Jason and John saying "We're Baaaaack" and it'll be almost like old times again. Where has everyone been?
