In my experience on stores in the East is that they have areas or streets dedicated to a certain category on items. In China, they have the "computer and electronics" district, the clothing district, and the cell phone district. I remember one street had only cell phone shops for as far as the eye can see. Even the shopping malls are categorized (first floor: clothes, second floor: groceries, etc).
Japan seemed to be pretty much the same way, so maybe I just wasn't looking in the right area when I was there.
