M16 barrel stabilizer suggestions?
« on: January 07, 2005, 09:53:33 AM »
Im lookin for something to solidify the barrel on my SR16 and was wondering what you guys used on your guns (if anything).  I have used the STAR convertable barrel and it worked well, but the front site didnt line up exactly right and it took some modifications to fit.  Is there anything less painless?  Where should I look? So far all I can find is the G&P barrel lock and I cant see where it would work any better than the TM peice. Thanks, Rick

I'm not sure how your barrel attaches to the upper reciever, but what I did on my VN was I placed a notecard between the outer barrel and the reciever so it didn't wobble much (now it's all metal and no wobble YAY).  But that's the best thing to do that for that kind.  Otherwise, try and epoxy it down.  At ACE they've got this really hard epoxy that doesn't allow much movement, some epoxies give a little I guess, and will really lessen the wobble.

What I did on my M4, and what I suggest to you, is to attach a rail sleeve.  Something similar to the A.R.M.S. SWAN sleeve that will attach to the front rail (around the barrel) AND the upper reciever will work great.  I forgot the brand I have, but it's an airsoft replica, and only cost about 75 shipped.  It creates a continuous, uninterrupted rail across the entire length, from charging handle to front sight post, and makes it incredibly solid.

Mine is installed on a metal body, but you might run into trouble if you install it on the plastic reciever of the stock TM SR16, since the upper rail (which is metal) is not permanently fixed to the upper reciever.  I suppose if you use threadlock on those hex head screws it will be ok, but it won't be rock solid unless you use a metal reciever.

Another option which is basically the same as what Christian recommended is to get a riser mount. You can find them anywhere, and don't have to spend a lot.

I've done this, and I got the idea from Mikey.

Just make one end grab the upper rail and the other end on the upper receiver and it'll stiffen it up tremendously. It won't be perfect though, but it's a good solution.  Not as low profile as Christian's suggestion, but if you're mounting some kind of sight, it works out.

Metal receiver is always the solution for the absolute best rigidity, but I don't think it's necessary.

I think you have a Freedom Art Sebine Rail.  Its always listed as "Sebine" rail everywhere, but yours says "Sebone" one it.

On my old SR16 I used the riser mount to lock down the front rail to the upper reciever, but the Aimpoint replica and mount I am using now wont do this.  Ill check out that Sebine rail tho.

Yes I really like this gun. I had Scott rewire it with a new Systema trigger so I could run the battery wire out the back and use bigger batteries on the collapsible stock.I also put bushings and a 100 spring in. I haven't used the longer barrel yet because I like the commando look so much better.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the 10.5 inch barrel on there. Made it handle much nicer (less front heavy).  I think thats the 3rd or 4th time the battery wires have been swapped from front to back on that gun, lol. Rick
