Both have there pros and cons, I have always liked spring shotguns, yet over time the springs start to become very weak. You can upgrade to a stronger spring, but then it becomes a lot harder to cock. Of course with gas this problem doesnt happen, although having to always pick up your shells becomes kind of tedious after a while.

Check out the spring powered Maruzen CA870. It's inexpensive, upgradable/repairable, and shoots great straight out of the box.

Do players using spring shotguns like the Marui M3 fare well in games or competitions?

Really depends on how well fine-tuned the "nut behind the trigger" is.

A skilled player can compensate for a mediocre airsoft, but the hottest gun can't make up for an unskilled player. Learn marksmanship, tactics, and then worry about your equipment....

Get a M79 like Vince has, one shot shotgun that ruins your day when fired at 10' (I know from experience)

P.S. Right after Vince blew the sh1t out of me, he was the first to ask 'you okay'?  I think I responded something like "some bee's stung my balls!!!!"

The Maruzen M1100 I think would be a somewhat expensive option, but it is semi, gas (blowback?), and the shell problem wiould be solved by getting a hull bag togo over the action at Wally World.
