M27 IAR replaces M249 in USMC fire squads
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:23:22 PM »
USMC announced that the M27 IAR, which is a modified HK416, has replace M249 as support gun position in fire squads. Although not belt feed, it is designed for higher rate of fire with less overheating than M4 and now has 100 round mag capability.
http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/10/marines-replace-m249-saw-with-m27-iar-hk416/

By the way VFC has announced that the M27 IAR will be available for sale in July and taking pre-orders now.

I have a Hurrican Shrike upper which i am placing on a polarstar M4 to be able to use as needed in support gunner role at Ops that require a support gunner in fire squads and only allow box mags if gun was truly designed for such. Makes me wonder how the new M27 IAR will be viewed at these Ops now that marines have done away with M249

And yet 3/3 has none in the armory, also it's fire teams, not fire squads.

Very sorry for posting old news and not stating fire teams not squads.
Seems to be that VFC announcing yesterday that they are taking pre-orders and wondering if Ops will consider this a support gunner weapon or not is new infor for rhought.
I forgot how unforgiving people on this forum are. Guess I should just keep my opinions to myself.

I read an article recently that said that the Marines were ordered to turn in their M27's because Colt views the M27 as a rival to the M4, and was getting mad that their rifles were being replaced.

AS for the topic at hand, it would seem logical to me that an M27 should be treated as a support weapon since that is what it is being used as in the field.

I believe the article you're talking about was how the army was making certain special forces groups turn in their 416's for the dispute with colt. The M27 will be replacing the m249 which is produced by FN.

It is quite possible that the article was about the 416, since they are very similar rifles.  What I found most impressive was the stoppage figures between the M4, 416, XM8, and SCAR lol.
