M14 Modifications
« on: February 18, 2013, 02:32:07 PM »
Hello Readers,

I'd like to talk about M14 accessories, specifically those involving sights. I recently acquired an ACOG from another user on the forums and popped it on my stock rails. This will work for now, but I will be investing in a rear mount rail to free up my irons and bring it in closer. Dilemma number two is the sighting issue. I'm, maybe, looking for a cheek riser to bring my eye up on the sight. I currently use a mesh half mask and noticed I may have an issue with that as well.

What I would like to hear are some suggestions. Do I buy a cheek riser? If so, bolt-on or strap-on (cue innuendo)? Or leave the cheek rest off since the mesh lower adds space between my cheek and the stock? Should I switch out the mesh for a cloth lower to use the ACOG for snap acquisition with no facial contact, and the irons for a prone/rested shot? Or is there a suggested technique to conquer the issue without spending needlessly?

Any advice appreciated.

i have an m14 that i use as a sniper rifle. i have no problems with the scope i use. if your using a cheapo scope you might have problems regardless. i use a shemagh to cover the lower part of my face and i have had zero issues with my gun

I use an L85A2 w/acog z-style scope mount and a paintball mask made by Save Phace and do not use a riser myself (the save phace are lower profile than standard masks). Its very likely you will not need the riser as it will send your eyes slightly above your sight picture.

I'd just use it as is without a riser and if you find yourself lifting your head at all then add one. Try using some rags or other clothing items to raise your head from the stock and see how high you want it. You can get soft risers for cheap at local sports stores and since the M14 uses a pretty standard rifle stock it shouldn't be hard to get a soft one that will fit.

Honestly I think you may even find the opposite problem with your scope being too low.

Personally, I would switch the ACOG out for an EOTech repro or a tube red dot sight. Better on the forward rail and very quick.

Those EOTechs are pretty pricey aren't they? This is my set up as I have it now. I purchased the UTG real steel forward rail that is compatible with my future real steel M1A1. Just had to buy a metric socket screw and swap it for the thumb screw. I was possibly looking into a bolt-on adjustable cheek riser and maybe a barrel mount bipod. Lower rail mods for this stock run 50 bucks and only are made in high grade aircraft aluminum. I think I'll just try to use my left eye if I use the stock as is to rest my cheek.

I would like an EOTech if they weren't so damn pricey.

I shall be branded a heretic, but check out greenbase. $50 + bad shipping, but eh...

Nice set up you got going there. You might want to get a killflash, but other than that...
