FT, in a real SHTF scenario, how long do you think the power grid will be up? Are you really gonna waste precious generator fuel or limited solar amperage on a power hog like a 3-D printer and the computers it takes to run it?
I thought I would watch the whole thing and reserve judgement until the end. I really didn't need to. In the first few minutes of Cody being interviewed, you could tell he was a spoiled 20 something craving attention. He wants badly to think that he's the lone person, standing up to this giant monolith of the NWO (or whatever humongous government force you want to choose). He's an Occupy protester who thinks he's fighting disarmament instead of corporate greed (maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan). Notice how he made it clear to the world (through the "fucking look at me, for fuck sake, why aren't you looking at me?!" medium of YouTube) that he was going to print lowers, which was against federal law without a license. He knew this would get him attention. He could have just done it, worked on improving it, and put the plans up anonymously. Why didn't he? Attention.
That's why he's talked with every media source that would give him the time of day. Did he really think that Alex Jones would legitimize him and his cause? If he has a brain, of course not. Glen Beck? Please. Would the New York Times be sympathetic to him? Really? All he did was play off the gun hysteria that's running rabid right now. Honestly, he's playing off a tragedy for attention.
The whole video was just another alarmist hit piece. The idea that 3-D printing would give toddlers and Charles Manson access to guns is ridiculous. "Teenagers are the ones most interested in 3-D printing..." Last time I checked, teenagers didn't have $1500+ lying around to pay for the printer alone, not to mention materials, the computer, the software, ammo, ect. That is, unless mommy and daddy ponied up for it.
The other point of "3-D printers will be commonplace in 15 years" is horseshit as well. They're still bulky, slow, and pretty fucking expensive (relative to the cost of manufactured goods). The base models will get cheaper, but the fact is that they will still be a luxury/hobby item, rather than something that you and all your friends will have.
The bottom line, really, is this: 3-D printing changes nothing. We couldn't stop Filipino insurgents from making pipe shotguns. The Nazis couldn't stop the French and Polish undergrounds from making STEN guns. The police all over the world can't stop criminals from making zip guns. There's been instructions on how to make all sorts of weapons out there for a long time. I remember as a kid seeing guys at the gun shows with stacks of Xeroxed copies of booklets telling you how to convert anything to full auto or how to make guns out of PVC and bubble gum. It's been around forever.
I'm tired of this douche getting all this attention and generally giving the gun grabbing camp more ammo (pardon the pun). We're not as crazy as this fuck. Most gun owners are responsible and (despite grumbling and working to get the law overturned) will follow the law. When people like Cody whatever-the-fuck-his-name-is and Alex Jones (a la his appearance on Piers Morgan's sad excuse for a talk show) are out there getting attention, it makes all of us look bad.
