Don't wear ranks, tabs, patches, etc you haven't earned.  Plain and simple.

The only exception to this I think would be at National Ops, where you do need to tell who the squad leaders, platoon leaders, company leaders, etc are.

And at the national ops the rank patches are very obviously NOT current military insignia (except for the LT and CPT rank but they wear the Lionclaw Paw with it to distinguish anyway)....
