Going Downrange
« on: August 08, 2005, 02:05:40 PM »
On Wednesday, I'm going "downrange" to Fort Benning Georgia. I will be gone for a good 2 1/2 months or so. Wish me luck. Its been fun playing with you guys(and gals), but with my luck, this board will be full of kids when I come back, and all the adults will have been run off. I'm sure I'm going to miss plenty of good gaming. See you guys in a few months.

Keep your mouth shut, volunteer for everything, and listen to everything the drill sergeant tells you.

You will do fine, but remember to have fun!

Good luck bro.

Said it once already, but good luck and thank you for your service. Watch out for IEDs, gastro-intestinal or otherwise.

I got the "keep your mouth shut" part down and the "listen to everything the drill sergeants tell you" part down too...but...I was told NOT to volunteer for anything(so far everytime I volunteered at a drill, I got a crappy job. One time spent an entire day shredding papers versus playing with M16s and stuff.

Just found out today that my unit got changed. I went from the 258th Rear Area Operations Command(or company, not sure) to the 158th Infantry. So now I'm a gunna be a true ground pounder(compared to my old "commanders driver infantry slot" crap), air assault school and all :D(this is based on what I have been told).

You have to tell me if they still assign KP duty to recruits at Benning.  Ft Stewart apparently pampers its sissy recruits with a completely civy staffed dining facility.

About the volunteering issue.  My "great" uncle  was an US Army Pilot, one day a guy came in and was asking for volunteers.  He wouldn't tell them any information about what they would be doing, so he didn't volunteer.  Turned out that they were wanting pilots to fly stripped down P-38's at low alt at night over Occupied France for reconissance.  He said he was glad he didn't step forward!  During that time I have had some people tell me that you did not volunteer for anything if you wanted to come back home alive.

Good luck on your training and see you in a few months.  But jez, its going to be humid down there isn't it?

Good luck, man. Sorry I haven't had a chance to get to any games this summer to see you off.

Have fun, see you when you get back.

Like I said, volunteer for everything.

You don't get leadership positions by standing in the back with your thumb in your battle buddies' ass.

Be the road guard, be the demonstrator for the bayonet course, be the first one in the chamber.  When they make you a Squad leader or PG, you'll know why.

And don't mention airsoft or the fact you have family currently serving.

The reason you got those sh*tty jobs at drill is because you are the FNG that hasn't been to BCT yet and isn't MOS Q'ed.  Throughout IET (BCT and AIT), everyone is equal to begin with.  What separates everyone later is each persons individual performance and role as a team player.

Again, you'll do great! 8)
