Curious who has. Any advice? Turning in my application with a good recommendation through a few connections. Anyone here do any wildland firefighting with BLM or any agency for that matter?

Some good frineds of mine dropped on all 3 major fires in AZ during FY 2005.

That was State sh*t though, not agency.

Drop me a PM, Matt, and I'll get you some solid contacts.

Back home in oregon it wasnt very hard at all to do firefighting.  I work in the summer with a lumber company and had my fair share of firewatch.  The 1 thing that may hurt you is that you are 17.

I got my Arizona State Land Dept. Wildland Firefighter certificate thru the Tonto NF Ranger Station in Globe. THe Tonto Hotshots are a good bunch, and work pretty steady each season.

Good luck!

I turn 18 on Feb 18th. I make the cut off date. This guy recruits quite a bit out of EVIT (Where I'm going) because we have a good reputation with him.

My only concern is the PACK test. I'm taking 130/190 WLC classes right now.

Years ago I helped do some training with some of these guys. They're animals, real real buff. And they pack giant loads of tools and stuff. That weight training will probably be essential.

I haven't done any firefighting with BLM but I HAVE had them chase me around on my motorcycle on a couple of occasions.  Cough, cough.  God dang, you'd think I was smuggling coke.

Yeah, I have a love/hate thang with the BLM.. And. for that matter, the Forest Service.. Like, they have a top notch firefighting side, but they also have a Tree-cop SWAT team.. ugh.

Get rid of the tree cops, that's what local Sheriffs are for.

Let BLM employees sit in a office somewhere and eat donuts till they drop dead of cholesterol-induced stroke.. Keep them away from the rest of us.

You might be able to get in on a BLM crew but Hotshots you need at least a year of experience.  State hand crews are nothing compared to a hotshot team, if you plan on getting on the hotshots, that pack test should be a breeze.
