Can anyone recommend a quality radio other than the 21-1860? I found some GMRS/FRS radios at radioshack, but you need a license to use those don't you?

Hello all,
Below is a link to a couple of the Radio Shack radios that seem so popular here.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

I have a couple of radio questions; I thought that all FRS radios are about the same in terms of performance. They all have the same power out put etc. Is that correct? The only real differece is the aesthetics?

Will AA move from the FRS format towards the GMRS for the extra power?

best regards!

Well FRS radio's are limited to their power in wattage, however, some people modify them or have radios that are a little older that weren't built under the same restrictions that can get some better range. Take the radio I have for example, the Radioshack 21-1860. A few guys ive talked to told me that that model was discontinued because it was too powerfull and was beyond the legal wattage & range limits. To add to it, someone added a BNC jack and antenna to my radio before selling it. Gives it a damn good range if I do say, but I still need to test it out past 7 mi.

Hey thanks jeff, that popped up right under my nose
Unfortunate about the price, but unless I find better I guess it will do.

Trashcan, I've been looking for a 21-860 as well.  If you're cool with it, I won't bid against you, and I'll split it half and half with you for one of the radios. I probably wouldn't want to pay more than $45 on it though.

GMRS works better longer range and output, GMRS has a 5mi distance vs FRS of 2mi, longer is better. but useing a HAM radio works more effectively but user needs licence.
