Well anything some what new is a big improvement over the MX line. Right now ATI is beating out Nvidia as far as cards go. The 2 top end cards from each are neck and neck right now but i dont think you are willing to fork over the 400-500$ for the card. (prices are from what i remember when i last looked.. so check before you take my word on it.) The ATI 9600 is a very solid card for a decent price that is HIGHLY overclockable. I currently run a Geforce 4 TI 4200 128meg and i have no problems running any of the current games. (also amd xp 2700, 512 DDR, 240gigs 7200 hd) I had the leaked beta for HL2 for a short period of time to see what it looked like and it preforumed good..
**** cab here later

supposedly HL2 is coded so that it will run better on ati 9600, but i dont think it will really be that big of a difference. i have a ti4400 and have played the leaked HL2 beta and it ran somewhat ok, but my comp is only 1.7ghx and i consider my graphics card to be fairly old now anyway. i also played the beta on my friends comp who have an ati 9600 and it was beautiful.

I'm not really worried about the game running slow, supposedly HL2 adjusts itself to work well with your specs. I'm just wondering how much better it will look with a 9600, and what graphical enhancements will be visible.

BTW, if I buy one, how do I know which model to get? There is the SE, the standard, the Pro, and the XT.

Well the best is the XT out of the 3. However if you on a budget then you should go with the standard because between the standard and the XT there isnt a huge increase or not enough to really make you spend the extra. Then again the XT comes with a free copy of HL2 so if you dont already have one then you can think about that. I do know that if you upgrade from the Gforce 4 MX 420 it would be a huge improvement. You will like HL2 much more with a better card.

 Isn't that a direct contradiction [:P]?

Sorry I must have not been thinking..when i wrote that i just woke up and rolled out of bed.. what i ment to say was:
You may not notice a huge improvement with a new card unless you have no other bottle necks. You computer works much like anything else in life.. its only as good as its weakest link. If you upgrade your card but dont have enough memory or a powerful enough CPU then you arnt going to notice a huge diff. Half-life 2 is playable with slower cards and on low end systems but you wont get all the wonderful effects that half-life 2 has. Hence you will like it much better if you have a card that can handle it (given the rest of the computer can keep up :) )

hopefully that is a little more clear.

Yeah, a little more clear [:P] My computer isn't too old, maybe a year or two old. Hmm... to upgrade or not to upgrade [8D]

Video Cards for HL2
« Reply #7 on: November 29, 2003, 09:00:19 PM »
I'm thinking about buying a new video card for my comp (HL2 is one of the largest driving factors.) My computer currently has a "64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420." From what I have heard, the GeForce4 cards are DirectX 9 compliant, but not fully compatible. What graphic features of newer games (that use DirectX 9) will I be missing out on if I decide to stick with my current card? If I upgrade, I think I am going to buy an ATI card. Any suggestions about what model would work well? I am leaning towards a 9600 Pro.
