Hows it going george.  Well first welcome.  I to am older, I have two grand daughters.  they dont play but i do.
Well you really have a huge list of options.  There are three airsoft store in the valley.
1.  Arizona Paintball Depot (they airsoft stuff to)  28 St. & Bell
2.  Command Post I-17 & Bell
3.  Gear Box. Tempe

A little advice, Don't ask which one is better.  People on here like one or the other.  And they HATE the other.
My favorite is Arizona Paintball Depot (APD)

I have see guys a lot older than me playing, and kids as young as 14 and younger.

As for fields.  I know of three right off hand.

1.  Vanguard (gilbert) All in door, climate controlled, light controlled, You are required to buy there BB's.  They charge $15.00 a session, session only 4 hours.(I have never played there)

2.  Fort Adobe (Phoenix) Outdoor.  Open area, some CQB (Close Quarters Combat) they have 2 fields.  You are required to buy Bio BB's, They charge $20.00 for all DAY

3.  Fightertown (surprise) Outdoor 5 fields, Huge open area on field 1, real nice CQB field.  There pictures on there website dont do them justice.  Any BB's.  They charge $15.00 for all DAY.
Fightertown by far is my favorite fields to play

So now I am wondering to play do you have to have a team or squad or do you just join up with other groups. I have been thinking about just going out to fighter town and looking around and asking some questions on the rules and that sort of stuff trying to get a idea how these games go. Thanks for responding I have several weapons allready just trying to get them outfitted with the correct gear it is amazing the types of weapons that are available nothing like when we were young

you dont need a team, squad, or anything.  Most people dont.  Feel free to show up, most airsoft people are very nice.  I will be at fightertown, on may 7.

All you really need to play is gun, mask, battery, bb's.  You can wear any kind of clothes you want, you dont need BDU, ACU.....ect.

Bring water!

fightertown also has a guy who sells hot dogs and stuff there if you get hungry..I myself will be at fightertown may 7 as well. The teams are literally made up of who wants to be on whos team..or if you come late then you fill in on which ever team has less players..everyone gets cycled onto teams so everyone plays with everyone at least 2 times before they go home no one is forced onto teams...quick way to make new friends at the end of the day..teams can be formed simple as "hey i havent played with you today lets team up" or we pick teams based on whos there...like make sure both teams are fair based on people who attend (ex. young kids...it wouldnt be fair to have an entire team of kids vs adults). like irishmaster stated everyone is very friendly and all you need is eye pro (googles or face mask (recommended to save teeth)) a battery to power your gun, barrel cover which you can also rent from there (a cover that slides over your barrel incase a BB is still in the chamber) and the key factor between playing and not playing or being killed and surviving...HAVING BB'S!!!!!   fightertown even has a field for trenchwarfare and a cqb field if you want to fix things up.
