Title: Sniper gear questions
Post by: StrivingToSnipe on November 25, 2008, 11:20:10 AM
So I had a question about gear pertaining to snipers. I will be getting a ghillie suit soon and was wondering what you guys recommend in the way of either going jacket/pants, or poncho.....also, what kind of gear set up is typically carried under the suit? I was looking at going with a battle belt , that way i could put all the pouches to either side and not interfere with crawling or access ability.  Any advice or tips would be awesome.... thanks

In terms of what type of guillie to get, I would go with something that doesn’t cover your legs. From my experience guillie pants tend to snag and get tangled in bushes and trees. This is especially true in the desert we live in. I suggest that you get a guillie jacket and wear pants in a camo that matches with the guillie.

In terms of what type of gear you should use, I would recommend a sniper waist pack:

They're light, hold around 6 M4 mags and you can find them in just about any color or pattern you want.
The link is just an example. You could probably find some cheaper versions with a quick search. Hope I helped out :)

I would recommend going and buying a rain poncho.
Then, put it on and try to crawl across your backyard.
If you like it, go with it.
If you don't, go with the pants/jacket.

If you want to see how someone made one and get some good ideas on making one of your own

a ghillie suit is always good, as long as its the right color
a belt is good too just make sure its not too bulky

Personally i think that "sniping" in airsoft is not worth it.  You need to be more of a hunter than a sniper to get someone.  With that said the ghillie suit isn't really needed. Most people construct theirs wrong and create the "wookie effect" where it is to big and therefore makes you noticeable. I also say this due to the fact, I've only seen a very few sniper rifles that have the range and power to actually reach out and touch somebody.  The people who own those weapons, did not use ghillie when i saw them. also with sniping you do more sitting and not shooting, then you actually do shooting. So in the long run, being this is probably what you want to do, i recommend no ghillie and just rock some good cammies. However if you do decide to buy a ghillie suit, make sure you construct it lightly and when you reach your AO, or know what it look's like, grab some local brush and add on. i hope some one this info is helpful.  Good luck.

Well my spotter and i went with the british style ghillie suits and they work great. You do not get the "chewbacca" look. Also if you are going to be a sniper one of the most important pieces of gear is a good radio since your job is recon.

yes yes i agree, but its MUCH MUCH easier to use a head set for that radio or even blue tooth if you got it.

a bluetooth for a cell phone, you call your pals onj your team at once (so long as they have headsets) and voila you got easy communications to your team

WT F....you use your cell phone?......i don't even want to get started on this.....anyway, about the Cavaly Elite II i think its great, i don't really have a wire problem, i mean only 2 wires. i think thats the best piece of equipment for any role. of coarse you need a radio to use it with. and aren't we all getting a little off topic? Going way back to the original conversation....Just stick to cammies light weight gear, you don't need to carry much. As in like a battle belt, maybe a harness for it. and a radio with a good headset NOT BLUE TOOTH! thats my advice. if your good you'll lay low, be quite and hunt. take the shot only when necessary. you can't really be that awesome bad ass you see in the movies...which i hate because everyone gets weird ideas in their heads about snipers.

but what if the guy you need to call isnt in your 5? i mean I got Barkley and the chance of him making it out to a game are as likley as him driving sober, so that only leaves me with 4 people to put in, plus you can only change it once a month!! Or what if you say dont get cell phone service seeing as most of the games are in the midle of the desert.....

I think it's a creative idea, but it definitely won't work as well as a radio.

You guys don't need to be so harsh..........  He's trying to help, no need for you guys to shoot him down.

na but it beats using your hands for a radio and they're pretty small, and with some electric tape you can rig it to the inside of your mask if you use 'em

im a sniper myself, all i use is one of those older military L.B.Vs u can get from a military surplus.....as for the camo, and ghillie effect, i cut branches off trees and shrubs, etc tht are at the field im playing and tape them onto my sniper rifle. I also take some grass, weeds, etc. from the playing field and place it in my helmet band or in the loops in my boonie hat. thats all i need and i was invisible at 50 feet,   really no need for a ghillie suit.

Hey guys,

I was reading this at work and our two Snipers in our Platoon over read this. They wanted to add thier gear for real life (in Iraq) for y'alls info.

As good as ghille suits are in a wooded enviroment like Georgia, (and northern AZ-sup.) We never use them. In the desert and urban enviroments, a snipers best idea is just to stay in the open. Its the last place everyone looks. As for our gear, our SOP (standard operating procedures) states "full kit will be worn at all times." That means IBA (armor), ACH (helmet), and at least 3 qts of water.

The only time we take that off is once we are in position, and right before we either take the shot, or right after we are secured with another platoon of riflemen. Hope this helps your buddies, and gives them a general idea.

o you mean like the handful of people who said, where cammies, and light weight gear......and by a handful i mean the majority of the real airsofters here....which you like to refer to as "posers" because they criticize you for your stupidity and lack of knowledge and professionalism to this hobby.

Multicam is probably the best camouflage pattern you can use for any terrain. It's a multi-use pattern, hence the name multicam. It works especially well in high desert, so I don't know what you are talking about.

Their gear is pretty nice from what I've seen.  I'm perfectly satisfied with my fleck BDU and my SAAV.

I didn't have the best time ordering from them.  I got most of my stuff in a timely manner, however they did make a few mistakes.  First, I had ordered 3 slings (two OD and one black), two came, but one was back ordered (they never told me it was out of stock) and when I told them they could change it to and OD sling they never sent it.   I asked for a refund and it wasn't received.  Also, I ordered a full loadout from them ( I think it was the Heer infantry one)  The flak vest was back ordered.  This was another annoyance because they ended up thinking they didn't need to send it because they thought they refunded it...  Finally, after about a month and a half, they gave me some other customer service guy who got it fixed almost instantly.  Not to mention the bad grammar of the first guy...

So I have to say their customer service isn't the best, but if you keep your order simple you might be OK.

Do some reading on the subject before you start. There are ways to cut back on the heat caused by all the burlap or jute. I've made a ghilie top out of a Marine Corps Issue top, added a hood and made a set of gloves. If you need any pointers I can get you some references.
