As for Civilain VS. military, from what i saw in the 3 minutes of google the military ones were all bulk order, and the civilian ones could be bought individualy
as for buying them locally REI, and bass proshop and more than likley any outdoor store should have civilians ones, not sure about military though, maybe allied/freedom surplus would have some? if you know someone in the military the PX store might sell them, not sure though?

Temp (Fahrenheit..) 100 90 85 80 75 70 60
Storage Life Months...22....55...60....76...88...100..130+
As you can tell from the chart, storage temperature affects the storage life dramatically. Storing them in you car in AZ is not a wise decision. 130 degrees in your car would result in less then 1 week of storage life.
The above storage data and time periods were based on "acceptable taste" measures, which is a subjective standard that may vary among each individual.
From a website not associated with SOPAKCO: "Test participants were asked to indicate which products they were presented would be rated to still be of "acceptable taste". Responses were noted, and average values were calculated to yield the data above. The above data does not indicate the maximum useful life of MRE food products. The NATIC study noted that nutritional value and product safety value of the products often extended far beyond these time points."
So it could last longer than a week, but taste like sh*t.

MRE's will be fine. I've been in shitty conditions and that was the highlight of may day, was a warmed MRE. Chicken With Noodles owns all.

thanks for all the info one more question what would be a food item to keep in the car that would be considered a meal worth callories and would last about 1-3 years in az heat, again if im stranded

Honestly MRE's suck ass unless your really, really, really starving. One (1) Military MRE has enough cal's to sustain a Soldier/Marine, ect for a 24 hour period, as long a you have enough water to go with it, or you will dehydrate yourself.
If you need emergency food, I would say throw a few cans of chef boyrdee in your car and call it a day. Better tasting and easier to poop.

I agree with Malicious Ind. I've been with friends who chose to take MRE's over canned foods of various sorts. At the end of each meal, I was always more satisfied, better fed, and finished/cleaned up faster than the people eating MRE's. Space wasn't an issue either, I packed very light. You'll have an entire car.

...chef boyrdee ...easier to poop.
MRE = Meals Resisting Exit

Honey is the only food that wont spoil.
It will, however, go stale and get slightly crystalline
