Marine's Father Sues Funeral Protesters

The father of a Marine whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters from a fundamentalist Kansas church filed an invasion-of- privacy suit against the demonstrators Monday.

It is believed to be the first lawsuit brought by a soldier's family against Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., whose members routinely demonstrate at military funerals around the country.

Albert Snyder of York, Pa., the father of Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, is seeking unspecified damages. The younger Snyder, 20, died March 3 after an accident in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. He was buried in Westminster, Md.

"We think it's a case we can win because anyone's funeral is private," Snyder lawyer Sean Summers said. "You don't have a right to interrupt someone's private funeral."

Members of Westboro say the military deaths in Iraq are God's punishment for America's tolerance of gays. They typically carry signs with slogans such as "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God for IEDs," a reference to the roadside bombs used by insurgents.

The church has inspired dozens of state laws banning funeral protests, including a Maryland law that did not go into effect until after Snyder's memorial.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokeswoman for the small congregation, said it is the first time Westboro has been sued by a soldier's family.

"We were exercising our First Amendment rights," she said.

Finally something is being done about them.

Personally, I've fantasized about exercising my constitutional right to turn an 80psi firehose on those idiots.....

Its actually her father.... Shes just a spokes person, hes the one thats really incharge of the whole thing....

Serves them right!  Let them exercise their right to free speech, though the deceased died in part protecting their right to do so!  But NOW It Come Back Full Circle and Will Be Held ACCOUNTABLE For Their Actions!  Sadly ignorant people don't see the light until you legally lay claim to their money won in court directly resulting from their ignorance!

Yeah, "their church" is really just comprised of two different family marrying amongst eachother.... So they are kinda scraping the bottom of the bucket for DNA...

I was thinking you could break a few laws and just fire a few rounds right through her... or at the very least, test out that new Iron Maiden I've been wanting  :twisted:

Yeah, thats what i was trying to imply, in teh incest/bad dna qualty bit....

And if you ask me, im with Dust2Dust... the 80psi fire hose just isnt enough

Maybe people should go and protest the protesters.  Carry signs stating what these people are doing, see how much they like it and make sure everybody knows who they are.  Start a website with their names, address's phone numbers, etc.

What I din really surprising is that no one has shot at them yet, with the emotions of a funeral I am really surprised not to see anyone fly of the handle and take them out.

You are aloud your rights as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others, I think this clearly infringes on the rights of others, there is no excuse for this and why it has been aloud to go on as long as it has really has disgusted me.
