Gear making help please... Whats Kydex?
« on: June 19, 2007, 12:46:25 PM »
I saw Ganef has made a quit a bit cool items out of it and i was wondering if i could get some help with using it please. Tips, certain tools i'll need.
I was also wondering if anyone knew how Ganef molded that kydex holster to shape his Glock. Did his use a machine  or tool to do that or what???
Anything will help. Thanks

It sounds like you need to do QUITE a bit more research on plastic forming before you try to work with kydex in this manner. Look into vacuum forming and thermal molding and go from there. It's not difficult to work with plastics once you get the hang of it. Instead for asking "what did Ganef do" in the open forums, why don't you PM and ask him directly? I know he's a busy guy, but I'm sure he'll do his best to help you out.

Sure he did, the point at which the kydex becomes formable is well below the melting point of the polymer lower of a Glock handgun.

I did no such thing, though actions would be feasible, they are unnessisary.

Kydex is fully moldeable at temperatures you can handle (uncomfortably) with your bare hands. I used a propane torch but you can use a heat gun to melt the kydex and form it with your hands.

+1
Couple of tips: (I've done a little of this in the past...)
Most heat guns should work - the ones you use to heat paint to scrape it off walls work, but remember to heat evenly and slowly. Patience is a virtue :) Don't rush it.
