Question about my CA Socom M14...
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:03:51 PM »
Hey Guys,
I just got done installing a JB Unicorn 6.03 Tightbore and the install went good...I noticed afterwards that when I chrono'd it the fps have dropped from 324-327 to 314-317ish...Any thoughts? I thought a tightbore would have increased the fps some???? Everything went fine and is installed correctly, the hop works fine... I'm scratching my head! Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks! Steve    I would add that it's length is now at 510mm instead of what the stock length was, I'm not sure of that length at the moment...it was shorter than the new barrel!

Perhaps some of the lubricant got on the hopup bucking.

That would cause lower FPS.

If this is the case, it will work itself out.

That might be the case...I actually did use some white lithium grease to lube things up. When you say that "some might have got on the bucking...", do you mean like inside the rubber itself? The bucking "is" the rubber piece correct? I tried not to use too much and tried to keep it out of the chamber and bore...I'll throw a hundred or so rounds thru it and recheck the chrono. Any idea on how much % of fps increase the tightbore would add? Thanks Vince!

Yes, inside the rubber, and yes, the bucking is the rubber sleeve, as opposed to the packing, which is what causes the 'bump' that effects the hopup.

Any number I would throw out insofar as an increase in velocity would be in err.

Too hard to qualify, too many factors.

OK. Cool. I'll have to remember to double check that next time. I did see that the gearbox doesn't look like I would want to tackle that just yet to install a 110 spring, I'll heed your advice from yesterday. Thanks again!
