Which weapon?

SKS, or AK47.

What are the pros and cons of each, and which makes are the most reliable?

SKS
Pros: cheap, accurate, lots of accessories available
Cons: doesn't look as cool, accessories available aren't that great

AK
Pros: looks nice, its an AK, and lots of accesories
Cons: not as accurate(in my opinion), large magazine capacity means you'll shoot more rounds, thus more money, more expensive as well for the gun

Both are equally reliable, and fire the same round.

Depends on what you need to use it for. I would suggest (1) defining your use then (2) determine what you need regarding accuracy, range, "knock-down" power, etc. and then (3) select a weapon that meets your needs.

"Looks cool" is crap if it cannot perform.

(this goes for AS weapons too - WAY to much emphasis is by some put on looks and style rather than effectiveness. On a related note, these "show off your guns and gear" categories you see in some forums make me laugh   )

well, as far as AS goes there really are only 2 things you "need". 1) eye protection 2) and a decent weapon (w/ mags). the rest of the gear is mostly for "milsim".  people generaly go for realism, but at least 75% of airsofters have either never been in the military or have no military training what so ever. they go based on what they read, and as far as gear placement they dont have anything to really compare it to, so either what happens is they have a "friend" or someone they know who has had the training and experience and ask them (which as we all know gear is mission oriented placement is a personal choice) or the look a photos they find on google. but what does make me laugh is the person who has gear with like 1000 pockets and 99% of them are empty, this is why i prefer a modular loadout because you only carry/take what you NEED!
just my $0.02.

Did you put this in the correct place?????

You want a Yugoslavian B-1 AK-47.  They have the strongest of the receivers.  The other receivers are made out of 1mm steel, the Yugo's are made from 1.5mm steel, thus they are stronger.
