fps reduction question
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:09:43 PM »
ok so im a noob at this forum but i play at vanguard almost every weekend, so i decided to purchase a new airsoft gun from airsoft gi, i got the combat machine m4, and when the airsoft gi chrono test came within the box the chrono said its shooting 350fps, the website said it shots 320 to 330. but it says 350 so thats too hot for vanguard and was wondering is these airsoft gi chronos reliable? if so what can i do to lower the fps to make the gun shoot 330? thanks for any help. -Bailey

Get a weaker spring.  Gearbox sells them and will installed them for an additional fee.

i dont have the money for that, is there any way to reduce fps? like shoot the gun to compress the spring? or like use a lower voltage battery or a lower power battery?

The only 'free' way is to shoot the gun... put it through a lot of cycles. I have a hard time believing you can afford to play at vanguard but can't pay to have a spring put in your gun.

The springs are like $5 to $10. But the fee for installation is like $30, right Xavier?

Seriously? They put springs in their flat rate instead of a separate one? that's harsh...

Gotta agree, springs are cheap, Vanguard's definitely not...

At APD they'll charge you no more than $15 to install it, and they have the necessary springs there already. Or, if you shoot your gun enough, there's a high probability you will lose the extra 20-30 FPS just but enough use anyways.

I don't know, I've never done that. Gearbox does great tech work, worth every penny.

APD is the place to go.

I had a gun being worked on for 6 weeks, got pissed, and took it back, and they still charged me $40, just to get my broken gun back.

Took it to APD, and they called me in about a hour and said your guns fixed, come and get it.  And now it works sweet.

APD is the only place I will ever go to get my stuff worked on.

Gear box is to dam far, $40 a hour, another $40 in gas, you are already $80 into it and they havent even looked at it yet.

You can try this link and learn to do tech work yourself, AR platforms are the easiest to work on:
http://www.mechbox.com/site/

Or as your fellow members suggested bring it to ADP sense they are highly recommended.  But if cost is an issue and you don't feel comfortable cracking open a gearbox you can do it the poormans way (not recommended).  Leave the piston compressed by 2/3 for a couple weeks, again NOT recommended.  $30.00 for a full days play seems a little steep and an FPS of 330 now days on a stock Chinese AEG is very hard to find and TM's prices are way out of line.  All the fields out here (CA) are 350fps or higher for CQB, and MOUT fields are between 380fps and 400fps, heavy gear is a must

I do all of my own work so repair shops are not needed, but Evike for a spring change charges about $30.00, that's a spring plus labor.  Evike and ASGi are only a few miles from my house.

try shooting it but not letting the motor turn all the way so the spring gets compresed, then leave it like that for a week, worked with my echo 1 er16 commando, and others say it works for their guns

And plenty of people will tell you... it doesn't work. With science to back it up occasionally! The amount of time compressed doesn't change the fatigue on a spring. Only the number of cycles... unless you compress it so much that you damage/fatigue/weaken the spring in one cycle... which you don't do in an AEG mechbox... otherwise firing the gun once would cause the same amount of fatigue and weakening of the spring.

Do a little research on metal fatigue... leaving a steel spring compressed won't weaken it unless you A. compress it more than the mechbox will compress it... or B. Heat it up to about 700 degrees celsius...
