Now that's a guy that I can respect.  To walk away from almost 4 millions dollars and choose to serve his country instead.  My hat off to you Pat, rest in peace and thank you for your selfless sacrifice!

not much i can add to that.  I agree completely.  i just wish the 22 Arizonans other than Tillman who have died got as much airtime on the radio.  Thery're all heroes, but its the celebrity that makes the air.

Well, it takes a special breed to give up a $1.3 million a year job and enlist for an $18K/yr job.  How many of those other "22 Arizonans" did (or would) do that.  I'd venture to say that none - or very few.  Did you know that he even had a four-year degree from ASU?  He could've gone to OCS and joined up as an officer, but went the enlisted route instead.  He even passed on a more lucrative offer with the Rams (the year after they won the SB) to stay with his hometown Cardinals.  He's no "better" or "more special" than anyone else who's serving their country and/or gave the ultimate sacrifice, but the guy truly does walk to a different beat and deserves the *extra* recognition he's getting IMO.

John McCain, R-Ariz., said in a statement.

I heard about this on the way to work this morning. A sad day indeed. Actually everyday that a US soldier dies defending our freedom is a sad day. He was one of the few....make that the only thing I liked about the AZ cardinals. A real true American hero ....RIP.

Personally, I'd like to see the new stadium named something like "Pat Tillman Memorial Field".  Unfortunately, I don't think they'll want to give up the $100 million for the naming rights to go with that instead of something like "Bank One Ballpark".  It would be cool to see a couple bronze statues of him at the enterance - one of him in his Cardinal's uniform and one of him in his Ranger uniform.

Pat Tillman seems to be what most of us wish we could be.

That's mostly because the "left" thinks that there are two seperate wars going on - Afghanistan (war on terrorism and Bin Laden) and Iraq (war for oil or something) and they think that the Afghanistan war is "just" so they don't dispute anything that goes on there.  I can't tell you how many liberals I have heard remark "good think Tillman died in Afghanistan - if he had died in Iraq, it would have been pointless."  Pretty sad.

From John MacDonald - Arizona Repulsive

"I want to rain fury down!

WE CAN'T RUN AWAY!

I want to blow up something.

I want to wear an ASU football jersey and a backwards ball cap; hop on my old, beaten-up bike and pedal somewhere; load up an M-16 rifle and sling it over my back, though I know nothing of guns; find a group of sickened, evil religious fanatics who kill in God's name, for power and control over their countrymen.

I want to mow them down.

Launch the missiles, loose the battalions, rain the fury down. If a slimy, murderous head pokes out of a cave, cut it off. If an insurgent or a militant or a guerilla so much as walks on the wrong side of the road, destroy it ... and take him along. Blast to the depths of hell those who have now plunged the world into war to regain scraps of desert divided and conquered and divided yet again for centuries.

On every bullet, each missile and bomb, inscribe the words, "Pat sent me."

Then fire them freely with the clear-eyed intent that this war cannot be lost, these brave soldiers cannot leave their blood on Middle East sands to let us falter and run away.

Then place a flower on the 50-yard line at Sun Devil Stadium, and pray for this to end."

This ain't over fellas, Sleep with the Angels Pat!  God Bless You and Your Family!

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former NFL player Pat Tillman was killed Thursday while serving as an Army Special Forces soldier on a mission in southeastern Afghanistan, Pentagon officials have told CNN.

Tillman, who walked away from a $3.6 million contract as a safety with the Arizona Cardinals to join the military, was in an area where numerous U.S. troops have been killed in battles with suspected al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

He was serving as an Army Ranger, part of the Army's Special Forces. Tillman played for the Cardinals from 1998-2001.
