One word:

HARDIGG!

I used to think Pelican was the heat until I kicked a Hardigg case out the door of a Blackhawk.  Inside was an AVA (aviation vibration assessment) kit, which is basically a series of highly sensitive accelerometers and processor displays.  After the fall, all items were found to be still in calibration, and were completely undamaged.  The case had but a few scratches.

In comparison, a Pelican with a few Multimeters inside was accidentally knocked off a platform less than 10 feet high and cracked on the corner that impacted the ground.

The resins used in the hardigg cases are second to none and seem to absorb shock and transfer it to the foam lining better than the pelican cases.

For your app, you should be able to pick one up for less than 100 bucks.  Pricey, but it will last longer than you do!

From my experience I like the Storm Cases better than the Pelican.  They also have a "If you can break it we will replace it warranty."  I dont have experience with the Hardigg case's but that sounds like one hell of an endorcement.

I would be careful with what you find on ebay.  There are a lot of cases out there with metal bindings and bands but wood sides.  They are made to look as if they are metal.  If you really want a metal case you need to go with a brand you can trust or a store you can go check it out at.

Also as far as American Airlines works.  You are allowed 2 checked bags plus 1 (bag of golf clubs, Ski's, gun case) misc item.  I fly AA quite often and have taken guns and skis several times with out a problem.  The only catch is they may try to do a catch22 on you because they are not "real" guns.

FYI - Southwest Airlines does not count firearms (including airsoft or paintball) cases against your checked luggage limit - equals no additional charge. Yet another reason I always fly Southwest!
