Eliminating upper receiver/barrel wobble on TM SR16
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:01:32 AM »
Well, I think the title says it all. I am wondering what I can do to eliminate the wobble on those two parts. I have heard of some screws under the rail, but I don't know what to do with them. Please help me.

To emlinate barrel wobble, all you have to do is tighten the barrel/reciever joint.  To so do, simply turn the delta ring (The thing you use to install and uninstall the handguards) until the barrel is as tight as possible.  It is kind of akward to work with, as you have to hold the delta ring with pressure towards the front of the gun so it wont slip off.  Its hard to describe, but try it a few times and look at the assembly while you do and you should be able to figure it out. Or, do what I did... Get an ICS :) In the future, if you're in the market for another m16 variant.. get something with a one piece.

Three areas effect barrel wobble or flex in the M16 family TM's:

1. Lock Ring - 50%
2. Fore and aft outer barrel mounts - 40%
3. Metal body - 10%

The first is the Lock Ring or Delta Ring (I think) which RickEJ6 already covered in a previous post.

The next area is the connection between the outer barrel and the fore and aft mounts. These holes are slightly larger than the outer barrel and shallow enough to allow for wobble. Ofcourse there are two set screws on the top and bottom at each end to secure this joint. however the lack of set screws on the left and right sides of the joint allow the barrel to wobble left to right. To correct this one could drill and tap some set screws, buy a G&G one piece barrel (recommented), or trim a vertical tab on the aft mount and JB weld the joints. Triming the tab will still allow you to remove the Lock Ring without barrel disassembly. I have done all three methods at one time or another. Adding set screws didn't last, JB weld worked well but looks awful, and the G&G one piece barrel is what I have today.

The third area the stock plastic upper receiver. Switching to a metal body is the final step in removing all flex and wobble. The metal threaded insert for the plastic upper receiver is not secure enough in the plastic nor is the plastic strong enough handle left to right flexing of the barrel assembly.
