our gun-obsessed culture
Sometimes your gun is your only means of self defense. It takes what, about 5 minutes for police to respond? That's a loooonng time to be fighting off some burgler hell-bent on killing you and taking your stuff.
The 2nd amendment was envisioned as a check against the tyrannies of government. I believe that it is the single most important right we have. Without it, the constitution is nothing more than a piece of paper. The only reason that we are still a country ruled "by the people and for the people" is because we are guaranteed the right to defend oureselves and, if need be, overthrow a government that has overstepped its bounds. It is not an obsession, but rather a last resort.
I hate it that people call me "obsessed" with guns because I regularly practice and know how to defend myself should the need arise. Most people either give no thought to the possibility of having to fight for their lives, or are content to trust in the government to protect them.
Oh, and what does "thou shalt honor your mother and father" have to do with guns? If you mean the 6th commandment "thou shalt not kill" that would make a little more sense. But still, is it wrong to kill in fear of your own life, or to protect the life of an innocent? I read that verse as "thou shalt not
murder".
As for the NRA, what exactly made them "heartless" to that situation? What does K-Mart have to do with Columbine? How exactly do you judge what bullets are "designed" for hunting?
