Icom radio post ....again....
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:15:56 PM »
I noticed that at the game on the 25th all of the cool kids had an Icom f4s, and I said "hey, I wanna be cool," so I went shopping.  I went to Air Comm on 46th street and McDowell, and the guy was a dick so I left.

My question is are there any local shops that are friendly? Won't rape me on price? Understand the purpose I/we are using these radio's for?

I know that there is Ebay and such, but many seem to be in questionable shape, and I perfer to buy this one hands on.

Hands-on?  Prepare to spend close to retail, which is over $400.

There is a reason that 100% of the guys that have Icom radios bought them on ebay.

ICOM stuff, for the most part seems to fit into that category of items where the MSRP is far, far, far more than what you'll end up really paying if you go to the right source.  The "going" Ebay price seems to be about $100-$125 per unit.  Sometimes this is with a battery and charger, sometimes it isn't.  Occasionally, they're programmed how you want them and sometimes they're not.  If I remember correctly, the MSRP on an ICOM F4S is $400.00

PM Sent, too.

eBay, I bought mine for 120 shipped. Its hit or miss with eBay you have to roll the dice sometimes
best to find a seller with good feedback rating,

I'd highly recommend Thomas out of Colorado, here is one of his Ebay auctions...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Icom-F4S-UHF-portab ... dZViewItem

Great communication, good price, and he even threw in a spare antenna for me.  Radio looks, feels and works brand new.  Thumbs up for sure.

Hope this helps,
Sin

I found a deal for 2 used ICOM's for 155.00 shipped from some dude in Dallas.  That is exception to the rule.

Benn, Skylar and I got 3 radios, 2 chargers, 5 batteries, and a hand mic for les than 250, IIRC.

We split the deal, and sold what we didn't use.

I broke even.

However (and this goes along with the "hit or miss" bit), one of the radios was a different band, freq range, whatever than the others and wouldn't work with everyone elses radio.

So, find a good deal, and if it doesn't work sell it for what you paid.

Icoms are worth their weight in gold on the fields of National OPs, where good comms can mean the difference between victory and defeat, literally.

I went through Thomas also and had a great experience.  It looks new because he puts all new parts (plastic body, antenna and mic) on the outside. New Battery and Charger as well.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND ++++++

I have my bid in with Thomas to pick up the radio.  His auction says that he will program the radio - does anyone know what specifics he needs to program it?  I'm completely dumb at knowing frequency stuff, so I just need the info to pass on to him.

Thanks in advance,

Heath

He needs to program it to be compatible with GMRS/FRS.
